Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

First American has some of the most affordable service call fees in the industry, which range from $75 to $100, depending on the plan selected and state.

The company also offers a vast network of pre-screened contractors and technicians, as well as a 24/7 claims department.

Although their service offer is similar to that some competitors, it must be noted that First American contracts are short and easy to understand, which is another feature that potential clients will surely appreciate.

I had, within 2 months, a plumbing and a cook-top issue for which a claim was filed. In both instances, First American did everything they could to avoid paying the claim, offloading the expense onto me (who'd bought the home only 6 months prior to the claim), and to shedding their responsibility as much as possible. I had been skeptical of home warranties, but the quick response time and the nice online portal they presented made me question my skepticism. In the end though, insurance companies earn their reputation by paying claims, and that isn't what they were interested in doing. Very disappointed...the pretty system, the quick response time...it was just 'window dressing'.

I'm a real estate agent in Colorado. I purchased First American Home Warranty policy for my client. This was their highest most comprehensive coverage known as Eagle Premier Package. I paid for it at closing. Up to date, they didn't honor any of his claims. The plumber they send to fix the toilet couldn't identify the dual flush valve " very common, sold for $ 22.00. designed for an optional flush of a gallon or half a gallon" This plumber submitted a repair request of 600.00. FAHW declined the claim. My client was told to hire his own plumber, fix the problem and send the invoice. I tried to help him communicate with the company on the phone, every time we called them we had an overseas... Read More

WORST COMPANY AND SERVICE EVER i was told at time of renewal the only thing that was not going to be covered would be Washer & Dryer. Fridge broke down and they do not want to cover it. After talking to about 10 people in over 2 hours yesterday, i was told a supervisor would call me back before end of day... it has been over 30 hours and nobody called so i called back. Talked to 2 more people and the supervisor straight said 'it was a mistake but we cant fix it, we can sell you coverage for $90 extra but it wont cover this existing issue'. I was lied to at time of renewal and yesterday when supposedly someone would call me back. The manager agreed they talk and read all that stuff... Read More

Don't waste your money. They use low end bottom of the line contractors. I am a property manager and they stink. They sub contract local trades and none that I have used are quality. Be very aware of A2Z Appliance Repair. They had to come out 3 times to fix a dishwasher that still isn't fixed. Not to mention, it took them over 3 weeks to do this. We called First Amerincan to get a new contractor and he never called within the 48 hrs timeframe. We finally got a 3rd contractor out to fix it. It was Sears. Just don't use this company

They are O.K. Had a few issues over this year with one of the repair companies they sent out. One plumbing company had no clue what to do or how to fix issue. Basically did nothing over three visits, except cut our copper faucet in half, ruining it. I was floored! Repairman was clueless, rude, and argumentative (and to be honest, kind of scary because of his nasty attitude) and then still demanding co-pay for basically doing nothing except CUTTING OUR FAUCET IN HALF! It was bizarre. Needless to say I did not pay him, and made sure the door was locked when he walked out the door. I immediately called First American who said they would take care of it, but then they called us about three... Read More

Until this month, this company was excellent. Now it is one of the worst companies of any sort that we deal with. DO NOT use this company - you will be sorry. Our heat pump was not operating properly. We called FA, they sent an HVAC service that did a repair that not only didn't solve the problem, but which was installed incorrectly. I called FA again, sat through 8 minutes of recorded, unrelated questions, to ask for another HVAC service - got someone who couldn't understand or speak English. Finally he managed to get a service order sent - to the same company! Except he didn't! He sent an email to me that looked official, but 2 days later the HVAC company had not received the... I dont know Fahw is considered four stars on this site, when all the reviews ive seen are one star. They are by far the worst company when it comes to customer service. Buyer beware! The people on the phones are poorly trained and at times will either flat out lie to you or makeit clear that they dont care about helping you. I have been told " well I dont know what to tell you about that." while people are laughing and cussing in the background. A good home warranty is a great thing but these folks aren't it.

My hot water heater went bad, they sent their contracted plumber, who also pulled in his network of water damage and restoration guys. That started the mess. First American's plumber (and the licensed plumbing and HVAC contractor I work for, so I know plumbing) told me I could no longer replace my 80 gal hot water heater with like as the new ones were larger in diameter and would not fit in the water heater closet. Nothing to do with First American, but the water damage company left their equipment there for over 2 weeks, chopped out walls, and then would not call me back to come and restore. I could not even replace the hot water heater until that was repaired. I finally hired my own... Read More

I bought a house and after being moved in for 2 weeks the water heater kicked a breaker. It took FAHW 3 days to finally have a technician come out. The techs determined that the water heater could not be fixed and needed replaced and said they had to first talk to FAHW and see what they wanted to do. Then they left. Another 3 days go by and I get a message that says they WON'T replace it because it was due to pre-existing conditions prior to my policy. I argued with them and said that I had an inspection report from a licensed home inspector that stated my water heater had been in good working order. And I also have a 2 year old daughter and we NEED hot water! They said they would re-open... Read More

My client purchase a home in Grand Legacy in Green Valley in Nov. 2016. on Dec 25, 2016 my client went downstairs to find water coming down in his living room. My client called his home warranty company, First American Home Warranty that I purchased from Kevin Wool Fahbp. Ideal Service was the plumbing company that was assigned to this work order by First American Home Warranty. Ideal Services Plumbing was in touch with my client, an advised my client on the phone on how to shut off the water to his home. My client did what the tech advised him to do. Ideal Service's tech said he would be in touch with him to come out and access the problem. One week went by and my client hadn't heard... Read More
