Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

I plan to cancel. I came home from a business trip and heater stopped working. The house temp was 47 degrees and overnight temperatures were dropping down to 27 degrees (below freezing). The contractor they assigned me was closed on Sunday and told me they couldn't do anything to help me or compensate me to keep me warm in the below freezing temperatures until contractor came out which could be 24 to 48 hours later. They did not consider this an emergency. Horrible policies and they did not care about my situation.

Horrible service. Water heater went out Monday. Tech showed up Tuesday. Paid $95.00 he gave me a list of things he said might not be covered. But it was so that was a scare. Next day the say I need to pay another $95.00 to move gas line so it's easier for him to install. Not my problem. Put it back the way it is. Said they would be here Thursday to install. Never showed up. Said they would install between 0900 and 1100 on Friday it's now 1230 no call or anything. Seems the technician wants to get you to pay more and more once he arrives. Horrible business. I will.be call better business Bureau when this nightmare is over. Oh did I mention 3 nights at hotel?

Worst Company I have ever had. I called about a water heater , no hot water. Tgey sent out a tech quite away from my home. The tech was rude and told me it was sediments that I need to get it flushed. I stated I just had it flushed last year. Tgey stated tgey had to contact First American. 2 weeks later and a lot of run around I got a denial letter. Called another warranty I had. They determined it was the burner on the water heater and replaced it within a few days. No sedaments. Now I cancelled my policy and they took the money out of my debit card anyway and are telling me I have to wait 30 days for a refund. This is the most unprofessional, lack of customer service abd worst... Read More

Their are Terrible. First , our addresses were not correct. It took us 3-4 times phone call with each time about an hour or more so to get it correct. Second price We had agreement for our three properties. . When the bill came price were doubled and tripled. We call them and spend hours with them. Finally they agreed with us to give us original price. I thought everything is going to fine. No they are giving us wrong priceagain with sending us the contracts. I can't get touche with the original person who signed us contracts nor had agreements with us for original pricking manager. Third, one time we call to fix the water tank. It took them to 4 days to have some one to... Read More

No, no, no, The process to get a claim resolved is HORRID. 40 days later and I am still heating my house with my oven and no resolution in site. You have to either deal online and wait at their mercy, or spend hours on the phone dealing with automated call filtering and extremely long holds (just to get hung up on and have to go through the whole frustrating thing AGAIN! The first contractor that came out to look at my heating and AC problem did not even look at the units. Just the thermostat, which was new, and said that was the problem. Then the technician proceeded to tell me that it would be an out of pocket expense of $400. The second AC contractor that came in a week later,to save... Read More

Do not get a policy through this company! They sent a contractor with an F rating with the BBB to fix my furnace. When the problem reoccurred hours later I called this contractor who was rude and unprofessional. I called the warranty company about the situation and they said they would send someone else out but guess what.. the original contractor is known for being a problem and no other contractors would come out behind him. I have spent hours on the phone with the warranty company and have been lied to, told I would receive follow ups that never came and treated horribly. I would not recommend using this company if you don't want to go through a hassle. They have not responded to the... Read More

Similar to many other consumers, DO NOT buy a home warranty from First American. They do not provide customer service but rather take your money and hide behind "their" guidelines which are designed to minimize their expense and maximize your frustration. For example, we had a toilet leak. The technician they ordered came out and "cleaned" the stopper but did not replace anything. I was told it would work but if not, they would come back out and repair the toilet. The cleaning lasted for 50 days. Then, it started leaking again. I called in to have First American contact the technician to come back out. They said that all they could do is send out a "partner" email and I would have to speak... Read More

This was the best, as far as I was concerned, then something happened and they got to be incompetent. A few months ago we had a leak from our air conditioner. We placed a claim, paid the $60.00 service charge and when the technician came to the house he said he really was not sure what it was, but we should put down towels and a large pan to catch the water. He did some taping up but advised that unless he pulled the whole thing apart (about 200.00 our charge) there was no way to tell. He said even if we did that there were no guarantees. Well, we went that route and had to empty the bucket several times a day (we are both in our 70's). I called back 1st American. Same tech came... Read More

The absolute worse warranty company to deal with. The vendors they send to your home (if they have one available) are very sketchy and unprofessional. If they dont have one avail they will give you the run around for weeks. I've been waiting three weeks to have my garbage diposal replaced. American Homeshield is a much better company...i can say that because ive had both.

This company contracts with sub par businesses. My washing machine broke down 5 weeks ago and I am STILL waiting to get it fixed. When I called to complain I was asked "What do you want us to do about it?". They should be on top of this. My contract renew date is next month and I am looking into another company. They also charge more than the industrys average for a service call. Check around.
