Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

First American has some of the most affordable service call fees in the industry, which range from $75 to $100, depending on the plan selected and state.

The company also offers a vast network of pre-screened contractors and technicians, as well as a 24/7 claims department.

Although their service offer is similar to that some competitors, it must be noted that First American contracts are short and easy to understand, which is another feature that potential clients will surely appreciate.

First American Home Buyers Protection Corporation is a sham. Their contractor list apparently only includes those who are unable to survive in business through providing quality, customer oriented service which invites loyalty from their customer base. The $75.00 service fee for a plumber to unstop a drain is actually higher than the prevailing rate with a senior or military discount, and the service is terrible. Calls to complain result in long waits for "the next available agent." A call to ask for a repeat service (because the stoppage was actually not properly cleared) resulted in a denial because the stoppage was in a drain that is outside the building foundation. I would not... Read More

I have had a First American Home Warranty for 5 years and have noticed that response times seem to be getting longer. Be prepared to go without heat or water for 4-to 5 days or even longer.

Placed call for problem w/ductless system. Agent scheduled repair company, they came out diagnosed problem (after 1st guy couldn't) and FAHW denied the claim. They said it wasn't covered!! YET the agent scheduled it for repair on our warranty!! WORST customer service, NOT USA based call center, and poorly trained staff!! I would not recommend this company for a Home warranty - EVER!

I love the concept of a home warranty...insurance on the systems in your home...great! But, what if you live in a town of 80k people and the warranty company doesn't have any contractors in your area? What if they didn't bother to tell you that when you signed up? That's right! You get a clown who shows up in his girlfriend's car to fix your A/C. He came from 60 miles away. You send him away because he is simply creepy. The warranty company apologizes and sends someone closer, only 50 miles away. They wire your system to run constantly until they can get authorized to do the actual repair. That takes three months because the warranty company wants to say it was installed improperly. (... Read More

Customer service is offshore, which is a disadvantage when filing claims. I had a horrible experience with the last claim I filed, which is my reason for looking elsewhere for new coverage at renewal.

Well, I noticed you said on the ad it was 24/7 on appliances. A tech came and looked at our oven that went out on December 3rd, 2016 and today on January 6, 2017 it is still not fixed. And the insurance company says they will call back and they do not. The company that is supposed to fix the stove got the wrong part supposedly on Dec. 27, 2016 and they never called to give an update as to whether they got the right part. Called them yesterday and they said they had to check the warehouse and we have heard nothing from them since. Husband called First American yesterday 3 times and kept getting a voice mail, no call back. He finally spoke to someone last night, they promised to call today... Read More

Do not buy a home warranty from First American, they will do whatever they can to not pay out on the claim. My wife and I have collectively taken 4 days off of work to be home for contractors to inspect our broken garage door and First American still says they need an additional opinion before they can fix anything. Our garage has been inaccessible for over a month now. Also, their customer service is rude, inconsiderate, and down right mean. They will leave you on hold for over an hour. They will give you false names. They will give you fictitious phone extensions.

First American is top-notch in my book. We have had them for 3 years, and have used our policy for 4 issues(2 plumbing, 2 heating ductwork). Most recently we had 2 issues at once-1 plumbing and1 ductwork. In all instances First American took care of the issues promptly, arranging to have contractors on my phone quickly the same day or day after I called. All repairs were handled properly and without undue delay. And in each case, I only was required to pay the service fee as per my contract.

I will never purchase a home warranty from First American again. We have owned several homes over the years and have used several different home warranty companies. First American is by far the worst of the group. We had a water heater fail over the New Year's holiday. When we called the company, they could not guarantee a time when a contractor could come to replace the water heater. After spending over 1.5 hours on the phone, we finally convinced them to call a contractor to find someone that would come. They did and the contractor proceeded to charge us over $400 for modifications that needed to be made because First American would not authorize the replacement of our same model water... Read More

Zero stars! I paid $540 for a home warranty policy with First American. Shortly after, my kitchen ceiling began dripping water because of a leaking pipe. First American sent a plumber to my home who didn't even have a ladder. He could not access the pipe nor could he see it. As a result, I had to call another plumber myself and pay $225 out-of-pocket. Not only would First American NOT reimburse me for this expense, when I canceled my policy with them, they only reimbursed me a fraction of the $540, citing administrative fees. This is highway robbery! I highly suggest you choose any other company other than First American.
