Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

The company also offers a vast network of pre-screened contractors and technicians, as well as a 24/7 claims department.

Although their service offer is similar to that some competitors, it must be noted that First American contracts are short and easy to understand, which is another feature that potential clients will surely appreciate.

During the summer of 2016 we went a total of 5 1/2 weeks without air conditioning. Every contractor they sent found more and more wrong. Each time requiring us to pay more money for items not covered by plan such as modifications to make their parts fit. Kinda backwards. Then because we have a heat pump when the temperature dropped below freezing the heat pump started freezing over nightly so it cannot be used for fear of burning out the motor. it has been 3 days, they assigned the company who repaired it in September and was supposed to have put the right amount of Freon in it. They now claim"We no longer work in your area". Still no heat. Their contractors always find a way to... Read More

We stupidly came back to this company after having had AB May for a couple of years. Even though electrical is covered under our contract - they don't have an electrician they deal with "in our area" which is Kansas City!!!!! So now we have to find an electrician on our own - a day and a half later, right before Christmas, and they might reimburse us. Terrible company - wish we had never come back.

First American only employs ONE CONTRACTOR for washer/dryer repairs. That is Sears. I have waited two weeks for Sears to even come to look at my dryer. After keeping me waiting eight hours, he did not have the part on his truck (heating element---wouldn't you think that would be a basic on the truck---and now must wait another 7-10 days for part and a re-schedule, when he could pick up the part locally. This is totally unacceptable and not what I signed up for! And they still want me to pay my $64 per month and my $95 copay. These rates have steadily gone up every year! Unacceptable, but I am being held hostage by this warranty company and Sears. The home warranty company should... Read More

If I could rate with no stars I would. This is the worst home warranty company. I have got a new oven last year from the warranty company. Everything was working great until November 14, 2016 which was approx 1 year after I received the new oven. First American sent out a contractor from general appliance. Contractor said I needed to have first American send out an electrician because it was an electrical issue. First American could not find a contractor to come to my property for almost 2 weeks. I finally got fed up and hired my own electrician who came to my house the same day I called. This started to frustrate me being I could find an electrician same day and the warranty company... UPDATE: As if it couldn't get worse I was on the phone with Ryan trying to determine why my issue was downgraded to a non emergent. He first stated it wasn't down graded, he then immediately contradicted himself and stated that it was down graded because the contractor never responded to the work order (the contractor has shown proof of when the work order was sent in including a time stamp, and the work order states non emergent, contractor was also denied the upgrade to emergent because the weather "wasn't that bad") after asking Ryan what constituted as an emergency considering my house was sitting at 52 degrees, and outside was 42 with a wind chill of 38 he stated and I QUOTE " THAT... I called regarding a water heater not functioning correctly, they were very fast to arrange for a company to put me on their schedule, the problem was the company was located several hours from my home & could't schedule it for a week, First American said they could not use a local contractor (which there is about 10) and would call me back with a solution, which they NEVER did. Ended up costing me $295. Terrible company, and terrible customer service.

This company does not honor its contract. Repairs are not prompt. It is impossible to speak with someone in charge. They do not assume responsibility for their work. The upgrade replacements are inferior. It should not take 5 weeks for the agitation system of a washing machine tp be fixed. DO NOT GO WITH THIS COMPANY!!

If you want to be stressed out, if you want to be given the runaround, if you enjoy being abused by customer service then by all means do business with First American Home Warranty. On the other hand if you buy insurance and expect help when you need it stay well away from this company. Still waiting after six weeks for a resolution regarding our wall oven which emits toxic fumes when turned-on. Wires burning? Some interior plastic element melting? Who knows? According to our insurance, the oven turns on therefore it works, therefore there is nothing mechanically wrong. therefor they are not liable for fixing the issue. Filling the house with toxic fumes or possibly starting a... Read More

I have been a customer with First American for the past 3 years now, I'm looking to switch companies. I pay First American over $60 per month for coverage. The reason that I want to have a home warranty is in case there is an emergency and I need something fixed or an expensive appliance replaced. I'm trying to be proactive and be prepared. I want to keep life as stress free as possible. Unfortunately, I find that when I do have something major happen like an appliance breaking they take forever to fix it. There employees give very standard and vague answers to questions that really just amount to them trying to get you off the phone. If you asked them a detailed question, for example do... Read More

We used First American Home Buyers warranty service for four years and never had a problem. Their customer service was good, and the contractors they used were professional and experienced. That all changed a few months ago when we needed service on our dishwasher. They sent out a company (J&B Appliance Repair) that was a total disaster. They said we needed a part and they would be back in a few days to install it. Never showed. I called they said they would be here the next day. Never showed. I called again and they blamed it on the girl taking the call, said they would call us back to schedule. Never called. Called them again they said it would be 2 weeks. Not acceptable.... Read More
