Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

First American Home Warranty is the worst home warranty company I have ever dealt with and their customer service is deplorable. I had an open claim on my oven for 10+ weeks that was not resolved until I filed a claim with the local BBB. The staff was rude and would not return phone calls or emails. Additionally, I had a claim on my HVAC on my new home. Their contractor came out and told me nothing was wrong, so First American refused to cover any repairs. I contacted an independent contractor who came out & told me the entire unit was outdated and underpowered & needed to be replaced. Horrible company & a waste of money. With the amount of the premium, coupled with all of my lost... Read More

They would have received a full five stars from me if it hadn't been for this is the second time in a row that I called and needed a contractor for an emergency. I was told they couldn't locate one after 4hours of waiting for a contractor to contact me. Water spewing everywhere I called them back. After six representative later.. Neither to speak English clearly I was told that I had to locate one on my own.. Are you serious! I located one in less than 10 minutes Go Figure! And it was one that said they'd worked with American before! WOW! They were able to send someone out within the hour. I contacted American again 3 people later I was told that the contractor needed to contact them. The... Read More

I have an issue with my return air ducts under my home. There is a leak somewhere, so must smell getting into home. The underside of my home is completely covered with a rodent barrier so no acces to ducts unless removed. First FAHW would not approve claim because stated their was no access. I had 3 HVAC contractors, one being FAHW's, state it would be cheaper and better to reroute return air to a vent inside the home, like most other homes have. Plus it would make the system more efficient. FAHW still denied the claim stating now it was a modification and they don't do modifications. So I had to pay out of my own pocket to fix the return air issue. What is hard to understand is... Read More

I have never had such horrible service. I submitted a claim for my bathroom in July. The response that I got back from them is we do not have a technician for your area we will authorize $125 for you to hire one to fix it. SO I had to find someone call First American back to get authorization for them to cover everything and instead of me having to pay just a $65 co pay I had to fork out over $700 to only be told they would only reimburse me $662 of it. It is now Nov and I am still waiting for my refund only to get a run around from them and a different excuse in the book on why I have not recieved it yet and they will not let me talk to a supervisor!!!!!!!

I had them for several years and every claim was a nightmare. I would never recommend them to anyone. All the time and effort it takes to get mostly contractors that don't want to work for them plus paying a $65.00 service fee; it's easier to just pay for it and get it done. It's bad when every contractor that comes out spends half their time complaining. Waste of my time.

This company is so corrupt and should be closed. I have had them for 4 years and just did my first claim Friday and it is now Monday and my hot water heater is still leaking on my floor. It is my wife my 7 year old and a 6 week old at the house with no hot water.I have talked to 4 supervisors and they are all on different pages. I was told by a customer service representative Friday on my first call that I would hear from the contractor within 30 min and would be fixed that day. I called back 2 hours later and was hung up on after I asked for a supervisor by some rude male. Then I called back and spoke to a another supervisor and he apologizes and said the girl that told me 30 min about... Read More

Do not join First American Home Buyers. I am customer and will not review my plan because this company (I trust it is not a serious company) wants to increase the service call fee by unbelievable 27% in one year. So, their approach is that you become a member with a low rate plan and low service call fee, but they increase the rate that much in the 2nd year. Do not join them. Not a serious organization. Run away. That is a trap.

TOTAL NIGHTMARE!!!! DO NOT BUY A PLAN WITH THEM AND IF YOU HAVE ONE GET ANOTHER PLAN WITH A COMPETITOR. ABSOLUTELY WORST AUTOMATED CALL IN SYSTEM COMBINED WITH INEFFECTUAL AND UNMOTIVATED CUSTOMER SERVICE. YOU WILL GET THE RUN AROUND AND BE TRANSFERRED UNTIL THEY FINALLY HANG UP ON YOU AFTER AN HOUR OR TWO. MINOR CLAIMS GET TAKEN CARE OF BUT ANYTHING ABOVE A LEAKING FAUCET TURNS INTO A 2WEEK TO 2 MONTH NIGHTMARE AND FRUSTRATING HELLISH EXPERIENCE. I HAD A LEAKING GAS LINE THAT WAS SHUT OFF AND FIRST AMERICAN ONLY HAD ONE PLUMBER IN MY AREA. HE COULDNT COME OUT FOR THREE DAYS THEN SAID HE COULDN'T FIX FOR A WEEK. THEN HE SAID I NEEDED TO TEAR OUT ALL MY FLOORS TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE PIPE.... Read More
