Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

Here's the excerpt of the letter sent to their company that was never responded to: This letter is to notify you of the terrible support I have had to date with your company. We purchased a home warranty with your company upon the recommendation of my mother, who is a real estate agent and recommended your company. In good faith, we requested a home warranty and asked that our garage refrigerator and freezer be included in the contract. Your salesperson assured us it was included. When we received the booklet, we glanced through and it appeared to us that it was covered based on seeing it listed on one of the covered pages. Now, let’s fast forward to our refrigerator not working.... Read More

complete waste of money I bought a new home in April 2016 and purchased a home warranty with upgrade for air conditioning service. The temps got to 108 this year and of course that's when the A/C took a dump. I was so relieved that I purchased the home warranty until I tried to use it. The phone # is completely automated with no option to speak to a live person so I entered my contract number and phone # three weeks went by with no contact finally I got a call from their vendor at 9:00pm after I was asleep. But never saw anyone, so I messaged them via their website center two weeks later they emailed me back to say thank you for my feedback but no offer to actually send anyone to fix... Read More

Horrible service. Tried to have a leaking water heater repaired or replaced. To date I still have a leaking water heater and I've paid a $60 deductible for nothing. They're refusing to replace my leaking water heater. What's the purpose of purchasing this warranty? If you have any other companies to choose from I advise steering clear from First American.

I would never, ever recommend 1st American to anyone who asks, I can only wish I had been kicked in the head by a mule to have stayed with them the years I had. They are so incompetent that I am the ignorant one to have stayed with them after so many disappointments, the last the straw that broke the camels' back..it took six weeks to replace my pool pump and we have missed that much of summer enjoyment with our pool..much of our disappointment was with the mis- communication between 1st Amer. and the 2nd company called out to repair our pump, 'elite contractors' who failed several times to keep both sides informed but I put much of the blame on 1st Amer. follow-ups to see the job... Does not have any plans to fix anything outside of their con tractors hours. My three young children were apparently supposed to be withought air conditon in during the hotest days of the year. It would have been three days had we waited for them. They said there was nothing they could do. They use horrible contractors. One simple search shows hundreds of complaints against their contractors. They don't care. When I complained, they forst stated that they would not cover unauthorized repairs, then asked for a statement, but will not say why. This is a shady company and I will be spreading the word where ever I can. I wish someone had warned me.

Absolutely not! Homeowners beware! We have had the worst experience ever and would not recommend first american for the following reasons: 1) fa does not honor warranty claim 2) hold time with customer services exceeds 30 minutes 3) contractors / "Repair technicians" (which are third party) do not have the skill and expertise to perform quality work. 4) contractors tend to have language barriers (both written and oral) (contractor in question also criticized by home as "Cheap construction) 5) contractor intentionally damaged our a/c unit due to our "Questioning" of his diagnosis. Not sure if he wanted a bigger job, or was just an angry person. Run --- don't walk -- away... Read More

First American. Sigh...where should I begin? On February 9, 2016, I submitted a claim for my dishwasher and microwave not working. The dishwasher was pouring water all over the floor and the microwave simply wouldn't work. First American called me the next day and stated that they had assigned a contractor and that they would be calling me. 30 minutes later I received a phone call from the contractor to set up an appointment time. The contractor inquired about the appliance brand. I told them they were both manufactured by Samsung. The contractor told me that they refused to work on those brands and told me they wouldn't be coming out. So, I call First American back and relay the... Read More

Stay away from this warranty company. It takes them forever to get a contractor and then their contractors are low quality. It took 6 weeks for a leaking exterior faucet to get repaired. Two of the contractors they sent never showed up. I had a water heater that went out and after 4 days, they told me there was no one, in the entire city of Denver, who could come out and repair it. Unbelievable. Their 24 hour "emergency service" is a farse. They claim emergency repairs will be covered within 24 hours...however that is "only if they get a hold of someone who can do the work." Again, 2,3 5 days. Overall, they are a joke...
