Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

We have been less than impressed with American Home Shield. Our heater wasn't kicking on last winter. Service call determined we had bad thermostats. Tech replaced our touch-screen thermostats with much smaller button - based thermostats that even looked cheap. They didn't cover the old footprint and we had the previous paint showing. It looked terrible and very unprofessional. The A/C in the bedroom wasn't keeping up. The guy came and said it had freon and it's just hot outside. Yes, it's hot. This is south Louisiana. We didn't have these issues last summer, something changed. He said if the freon isn't low, AHS won't even let him go inside to do more trouble shooting. Garbage disposal... Read More

I am a realtor, so I deal with many Service Companies. I will never ever recommend AHS to any of my clients again. I often purchase service contracts for my own homes and have had good service with Fidelity National and First American. I tried AHS for two years and the service is horrendous. To make a long story short, the AC went out at my rental home. AHS said they had someone on the way. No one showed. Renters were calling me every few hours in a panic. After many calls to AHS and days later, they admitted that they had no one available and authorized me to use an outside source. I had two AC companies assess and give me bids. The assessment was the same. I went with the cheaper... Read More

How can an electrical issue not be covered because the wiring is in the walls? Where else would it be?

Absolutely horrible customer service! Our air conditioner broke 2 weeks ago when the temperature was 90 degrees and they still have not fixed it. We have spoken to customer service many times and have been told wrong information each time. They have told us they ordered the parts and they were shipped. When we called the day the were supposed to be in, they told us that the parts were not ordered. It is now going to be an extra week for the ac to get fixed. It is unacceptable. I do not recommend using this terrible company!

To Whom it May Concern, I have to say ,this company is one of the poorest in customer service ! Its shameful how this company justifies to Not replace an appilance . Especially when this company has serviced this same appliance for 2 1/2 + years. To have an associates ,after a 1 to 2 Hour wait on hold to tell my Mom a disabled senior, a heart patient , and a VETRAN to go out and climb up to central air to see what missing!?? To apply my Mom or myself may have removed any of the missing parts. Or She may contact the service reps this company choose and ask them what they did with the missing parts. Just understand my Mom and I can't walk without assistant with... Read More

I have been a member for 15 years. I have always been happy with their service until this year. I have had my AC go out, my dryer go out and now my refrigerator go out. I had to demand a speed up on getting my parts ordered for the my AC after being with out it for 4 days. My dryer has been out since 8/9 and the part kept being back ordered I demanded a cash out. Now my refrigerator is 18 years old. I want a case out on it but since they want to put a used part in it they will only give me $450. That is not expectable. They do not have enough employees to take care of their customers. It has been very disappointing. I just pray I get my cash out money.

Well I used to be happy with them was a customer for 10years and just recieved a notification that my contract was no longer going to be able to be renewed. When called customer service about the reason...I have never been late with my renewal they gave me an address that I had to write to. What???? Is it because I used their service??? So I guess insurance companies punish you if you actually have to make a service call. Hmmmm I paid $900/year and $75/service. I am a real estate agent too. I sent my letter and no response!

Worst company out there. Called three times for repair of my dishwasher. They sent someone three different times and never washed dishes properly. Finally flooded my entire kitchen so had to pull dishwasher and because they could not come out and evaluate it they would not cover anything.

My comment isI am very upset with the way the repairing or replacing of our AC UNIT have not been handled. We have been going back and forth with this for the past 3 or 4 months. Our AC went out totally on August the 26 and it still is not working, AHS only cares about its bottom line. I am a senior citizen with health issues and having to go to my other daughter house and my grand daughter because the technician they sent(Piedmont Mechanical Contractors Inc ) to this date have not got the AC Unit working, in addition of charging us 660.00 for Freon. They have been our here every day for a week and each technician day something else is broken.I have had it with AHS and I expect to be...
