Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

My AC started giving me trouble on Tuesday. I tried to submit a request for service on the AHS website but the website kept going down. So I thought no problem I'll just call so I submitted the request through their automated system. This was at 11am on Tuesday. Website says they'll assign someone within 15 minutes but no one was assigned until midnight (I know this because I got a text message at 12:18am notifying me). The company they assigned is no where near my location but I thought maybe it was a big company with a large working radius. They gave me instructions that they'd contact me within 24 hours to schedule service. Didn't hear from the contractor so I thought okay no big deal... Read More

This company will not stand behind you in an emergency over a three-day weekend they never called one time when my air conditioning went out I am an elderly person and I have still yet to hear from anyone in management from this company even the automated system will hang up on you and tell you to call back during normal business hours

First time we requested service was great. Second time has been horrid. Poor communication from the first contractor and AHS. We didn't know the dishwasher was being replaced until we called the contractor to find out what was going on a week after he said he'd contact AHS about replacing it. Then we had to call AHS about it. Finally received the new dishwasher a month after requesting service. It has been sitting in my living room for two weeks. The only company they have to do the install is to busy to do it. We've been told we have to spend our time to find someone and get them approved by AHS to do the install. Then we either get the company to agree to invoice AHS and wait for... Read More

American Home Shield sent out 1st tech to fix my central A/C. Repair lasted 4 hours. They send another, at another date, the 2nd tech, only for him to state that the unit was not repairable. Both of those techs were incompetent. I had company coming in with an infant. I took the initiative to hire a local company who had made the repair. American Home Shield will not reimburse me for that billing stating that I need a second opinion. If they already sent 2 techs, would that second tech (as stated) be the second opinion?

I had AHS on three properties for about 20 years and I seldom used them, except for may be 4 minor repairs that should have been covered by the deductible .when I contacted them to repair a clothes washer the repairman said that the washer was old and had outlived it's usefulness, but I was still charged for the service call. Another time I called them to repair a furnace and while waiting for the service man,I decided to replace the filter and took the old one with me to match it. when I returned the service man said that the repair was not covered since the unit was ran without a filter .I told him I was in the process of replacing the filter ,but He did not care and that I owed Him money... My air conditioning is out in 90 degree weather on a Tuesday and best they can do is get something to me by Friday. The wait time to reach customer service via telephone was over 30 minutes. It is almost impossible to talk to somebody there. Rude and ineffectual service. Stay away from this company, is my advice.

Scam Artists. They employ deceitful contractors. Don't give these bums any money at all. Had 4 contractors evaluate HVAC. All but American home shield said it was the main compressor.. Their tech said it was a 15 dollar filter dryer and 1,000 dollar Freon replacement (guess which of these 2 costs they cover). Impossible to get a live agent on the phone. When and if you do they say their computers are down and to call back.

AHS is horrible. They give you no way to write to them. It's only by phone and even then, actually getting a person on the phone is next to impossible. They put themselves first, making sure they get their service call fee LONG before the customer's appliance is repaired. Despite what a customer is able to tell a technician, AHS forces them to make a trip for a "diagnosis". The technician can't bring the likely needed part with them, make one trip, and get the customer back in service. They have to order the part from AHS, which takes additional time and a second trip. If the part arrives broken in shipping, as happened once to me, it takes more time. For almost 6 weeks now, I... Read More
