Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

This company is terrible. I have waited on hold for 2.5 hours to speak to a customer service representative and finally hung up. We had to wait 10 days to get our hot water heater replaced even though the new tank had already been delivered. AHS used a repair company that was 1.5 hours away with only ONE technician that could install the new tank so we waited 7 days after the initial visit. They refused to find another alternative closer to us that could do the job quicker. Their customer service managers do not care about the customers and show no desire to help. Don't use them.

Your service is rated very high. I have had this service for seven years. I have probably only used it three or four times. The most recent is for a microwave oven problem. The service technician from the company that is contracted for this item in my area has been to my house three times and the result is that it still isn't working. I called again today and they told me more parts were on order and that they wouldn't arrive for another week and at that time would call to schedule an appt. Today is Jan 16 2018 and this problem has been ongoing since Sept 27, 2017 and I still have no satisfactory result. You should re-evaluate this service contractor since he is definitely not doing... I call in to American Home Shield and for 3 days in a row and was on hold each time for an hour or more, i then figured out that the best time to call them is at night if you don't want to be on hold for hours. I ask to speak to a supervisor and was told that one would call me back, lets just say after two days i never got the call back, long story short i cancelled my account with them.

This company should not be rated #1. If you need to speak with customer service average wait time is always over 1 hour and the customer service people are not helpful or friendly. The service technicians/companies they use are not much better. This company is horrible!

The first experience with AHS and it is terrible. 1. Assigned a contractor that does not answer the contact number and cannot leave a message because "voice mail is full" 2. Trying to reach the company for emergency repair "no heat in below freezing temperature" have to wait until the next day at 9:00 then it is 30 min wait. 3. online chat never never responds .

Horrible experience the 1st time using AHS service. HVAC problem was badly mis-diagnosed by the service company. The diagnosis was of course not covered under the policy but the service company would fix it for $1200. Seems like some collusion between AHS and their service companies. Deny the repair and let the service company make some money. I contacted my own service company and found a completely different issue was the cause. Called AHS to complain but of course...they don't refund even if their service company miserably failed on diagnosis. This problem was covered under the policy. Beware of AHS...worthless policy.

american home shield refuse claim on leaky toilet due to improper installed when I put tile flooring in the bathroom. The plumber said American Home shield would not pay because the remodeler fail to raise the flange using spacer. He offered to do the repair for $389.00. I told him to submit to American Home Shield and I would challenge the denial if the do so. I never heard back from the plumbing company or American Home Shield. I was able to do the repair myself for cost 35.00 but I stuck with sheet rock repairs that American Home Shield is responsible for.

85yo SENIOR HEALTH ISSUE: Total disregard/concern for resolve & customer service. Over 6 hours ON HOLD hours alone since Jan. 4 trying to get resolve for my 85 yo father who has dementia. This does NOT INCLUDE the numerous hours spent since October, 2017 holding for the perpetual "unusually long hold times...more than 30 minutes", scheduling for service, service call, waiting for parts & reschedule to replace parts. Jan. 4: Customer Service did just that - provided Customer Service & said they would replace fridge. Jan 9: Hadn't received email as advised so back to the "unusually long hold times...more than 30 minutes". About 1.25 hours on hold, reached Janet, purchasing. Advised... Read More

These ppl are a joke! I had them out to repair my washer and dryer and they determined it was unfixable and offered me a new replacement unit. Great right? WRONG!!! They messed up and sent me a gas model instead of an electric model! They are trying to say I approved it and charge me a few hundred dollars for a restocking fee! The installers they sent are on my side. They agree I do not owe a restock fee and contacted them on my behalf. That was over 2 months ago!! They never called me back. They never even told me I had a restocking fee untill I called in and waited an hour on hold to speak with someone...who then transfered me to another department promising a small wait..ANOTHER HOUR!!...
