Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

It will be 6 days of no toilets, showers, etc. for my family. I have reported the issue and still no resolution or service provided. I pay my bill on time (automatic payment), this is my first claim with American Home Shield (AHS), and I have done my part as a customer. However, AHS has failed to provided service at my residence or escalated the issue as needed. Due my residence having a water drainage/stoppage issue and paired with the sub freezing temperatures in the area I fear of additional possible damages (burst pipes, leaking water, etc.) that may result from AHS negligence in resolving the issue in a reasonable time frame.

I was on hold for 1 hour and 25 minutes. Hung up and called back and waited 15 minutes and hung up again. I have again tried and waited. This place contracted me out to such a horrible Appliance company. I’m short, for past year and half, that company customer service has gone bad. Very disappointed.

Let's just say, as a loyal customer with multiple policies since 1986 - I will NOT be renewing my warranty moving forward. They have lost their customer focus and their quality service levels. While I appreciate the ability to conduct my business/request via phone & pc, when we had an emergency (on more than one occasion) - I was on hold for over an HOUR trying to reach a human. This coupled with the fact that the service companies they are contracting with are subpar. Is there no due diligence on these companies?? Because to your customers -- they ARE AHS. While I have been happy with the actual warranty coverage for the most part -- I will be going with a local warranty provider... Read More

Worst company for home warranty, I tried two different time to get broken appliance repair and AHS just find a way to deny the claim. So AHS is just a rip off company to get your money please stay far away from AHS. I was on the phone for hours with them and when i told them to cancel my service They took another payment of 61.32 and said it was a cancellation fee. WOW take 61.32 for two years plus 75.00 service fee when i make a claim don't honor the claim and still charge me 61.32 cancellation fee. I think this is a home base company just a big SCAM!!!

This rating of #1 is crazy. I am still trying to get an issue fixed after over 3 weeks! I have contacted AHS numerous time, in numerous ways and it is STILL not fixed. I have had a service company out that has missed 2 appointments and AHS will not correct the issue with the contracted company. I have been sent to other contracted companies twice, only to be told they do not service my area. One of the companies was over 2 hours away from me. As far as customer service, I have been on hold for over an hour several times, I am currently listening to the wait music and have a "wait time greater than 1 hour". The live chat option on the website is not reliable. It is not available... Read More

I have been on hold for over 1.5 hours for the 3rd time today! I cant believe they are #1 and get a rating of 10 for service. My service request for oven repair was closed even though the technician they sent said that they did not carry parts for the model and it needed to be replaced. Their website does not offer chat either and there is no way to get hold of a representative.

How about this for customer service...AS I TYPE THIS I've BEEN ON HOLD FOR A TOTAL OF 1 HOUR 48 MINUTES AND 15 SECONDS AND COUNTING!!!!!! Worse customer service and wait tie ever! I know lots of companies are going with automated messaging that directs you to different departments but this is extensive, and unacceptable! I'm literally using my cell phone to shop around other plans where at least you get a live person on the phone. I found 2 that are more reliable than AHS and one even has an annual premium less than AHS based on my homes sq. ft. I was able to talk to someone within 3 minutes of calling them as well. When AHS finally answered my call after being on hold for 2 hrs... Read More

the worst warranty ever, they put you on hold for hours, they take a long time to get back to you and get the repair done, very bad service. If you want to pay more and get bad service, sure go to them.

I was on hold for 1 hour and 25 minutes. Hung up and called back and waited 15 minutes and hung up again. I have again tried and waited. This place contracted me out to such a horrible heating and plumbing company. I will be disputing the fee I had to pay for this awful company. They did absolutely nothing for us and to too it off, we were lied to. We had someone from my husbands mothers job come out and he took a look at it and said the unit was fine. Why you ask. Because the company that came out u hooked wires amd didn't hook them back up. Thank god my husband went to look at the furnace again. It is 25 degrees out and I had to deal with such nonsense.
