Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I have read many of the other comments and have to agree that the service they provide is awful. The wait time on the phone is excessive and the service person when you finally reach them is not responsive to your problem. I have been without my oven for over 2 months waiting for the parts, and then when they arrived, the oven still did not work. I was told by the technician that it should be replaced. But today ahs told me it can be repaired, but not until after 1/23. My other option is to accept an offer of a check that would not cover 1/5th of the cost of replacement. Bad company, bad service.

Sorriest company I've ever dealt with. Being put on hold for 58 minutes for the second time in a day is totally unacceptable. The lady I dealt with was courteous but you better have a lot of time to wait when you call in for a service call. We turned in for repairs to our Geo-thermal heat on a Sunday and still hadn't heard from a contractor by Wednesday night. Waiting 3 days in December for heat and a cold front with 0 degree windchill coming on Christmas Day tends to get me concerned and frustrated. To top it off, she told me they didn't have a contractor in my area that could work for them. Come on, 3 days and they hadn't gotten back with me to tell me that. They left me out in... Read More

Horrible, I have dealt with AHS for 9 years. I have had nothing but headaches trying to have a pool heater repaired for the last two years. Mind you I started this plan in a brand NEW home with new appliances and everything. I actually even replaced all my appliances four years ago because I wanted to upgrade builder grade. This year I find out I am having to renew in a "special plus plan" doubling my premium. When I called and yes it takes hours to speak with customer service I was told I had 60,000 dollars in cost to their company. I have never had a major repair to any system in my house. A few appliance calls over 9 years that I saw the bill charged to AHS, was maybe 200 dollars,... Read More

Worst customer service!!! called 3 times only to be on hold for over 2.5 hrs each time, finally on 4th call and 1 hr on hold "agent" said she could not help me...i asked for a manager and was promised a call back within 24-48 hrs by a manager...its been 7 days no call back. I had made 4 on-line service requests since October for the same problem, no one has shown up or called. Since this is my pool, more damage is being created due to failure of AHS not responding!! This has had a domino effect on the rest of my pool equipment...very upset. its to bad because they use to be good...Next stop, B.B.B and social media!! BOTTOM LINE A.H.S. Does not care anymore!!! UPDATE....After... Read More

I would absolutely never recommend these guys. Their customer service is hit or miss but EVERY time I've called I've had to wait half an hour at a minimum with an hour and a half at the upper limit. On top of that, I've had my call dropped immediately after waiting so I have to start over. They have no way to supply details about the fix required. For example we have a bathtub that needs a leak fixed. But the leak is NOT a plumbing problem, it's a fiberglass problem, which requires a different company to make the fix. But the only way to get the right company is to call and wait for an hour on hold and hope you get the phone quick enough when they do finally pick up or they hang up... Read More

This company is an absolute joke! We got our home warranty in, I believe, May. Our dryer broke down at the end of October. My husband called AHS and we received a call from Josh's Appliance Repair in Mulvane, Kansas, within 3 days. He scheduled them to come out after 4, because I wouldn't be home from work until then. The repairman said that was fine, and scheduled us from 4-6 the next day. At 3:30pm, he called my husband to let him know he was sitting outside our home. My husband told him (again) that I wouldn't be home until about 4:10, to which he said that was not a problem. At 4pm, he called my husband back. He was at work, on the phone with a client, and couldn't answer his cell... Read More

Getting hold of them is a nightmare. Took over 45 minuets (twice) to get through and they told me that the contractor has not yet submitted their info and the cant do anything. My heating system is not working and it is the winter. They go with the least expensive option and it often does not fix the issue. This is the third time trying to fix this issue n

On the phone now for 49 minutes and counting which is almost always the case customer service worst ever!! If hold times always this long seems simple..... add more people!!! I only stay because I keep thinking things will improve shame on me!! This will be the last thing me!! I think it is interesting that rating on line are all really good but if you actually read comments every one is horrible from beginning to end. Anyone reading this do yourself a favor and DO NOT CHOOSE AHS!!! PS now at 54 minutes on hold really..... Now to submit this comment I have to rate from 1-5 stars will not allow zero stars so have to chose 1star when actually I would rate negative 5stars!
