Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

This is the worst Company to do business with. Do not buy their service. Had 06 contracts, and had one service for A/C, cost me big out of pocket. I sold a house and they wanted me to pay an early termination fee. I did canceled out 05 contracts for poor customer service and plan is out to help shady contractors. One home A/C replacement was going to cost me $1200.00 out of pocket plus the yearly contract for $350.00. Stay far from AMERICAN HOME SHIELD.

SCAM SCAM SCAM. Twice they've sent people unqualified to work on the appliance in question. Said they would not charge me and then they did TWO WEEKS LATER when I was less likely to notice. After a half hour on the phone, they said they will reimburse me in 2 weeks. I'm white-hot with anger. It's a worthless plan as it won't reimburse for emergency repairs and god knows, you're not going to get quick service through them. It has taken me between 30 minutes to AN HOUR to reach someone by phone. Save your money. You'd be better off buying lottery tickets with the money they charge for a warranty.

HORRIBLE COMPANY - THEY NEED TO BE REPORTED TO THE BBB - THERE SHOULD BE A 'CLASS ACTION SUIT' ...... HAVE THIS COMPANY DISSOLVED! THEY DO NOT RESPOND TO EMAILS, YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR A MINIMUM OF ONE HOUR AND THEN NO ONE ANSWERS . . .SO YOU WAIT ALL THAT TIME - WASTING YOUR TIME FOR THESE IDIOTS!!! IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEM WITH A FURNACE OR AIR CONDITIONER GOING OUT . . . GOOD LUCK BECAUSE YOUR NAME & PHONE NUMBER THEN MUST BE PUT INTO A 'SEPARATE CATEGORY' AND YOU ARE BASICALLY NEGLECTED FOR ALL FUTURE CALLS. AHS WANTS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU AND THEY THEN HOPE YOU CANCEL SO THEY ARE NO LONGER RESPONSIBLE TO REPAIR YOUR APPLIANCE OR WHATEVER!

my heater stopped working on nov 30th. i called AHS. the tech came out on dec 2 and replaced a safety switch which is like a fuse. when it blows it indicates the furnace is overheating. they did not look for the reason it blew. the next day it blew again. i called AHS again and the tech came out and again replaced the same part. it blew again within a few hours. i paid for a second opinion from a heating company. they said the heater was leaking and needs replacing. this opinion came from a professional who does NOT replace heaters, so he had no dog in the fight. i called AHS a third time after one hour+ on hold, and they said i could not schedule another appointment because they had... American Home Shield is crap. Don't pay the premium (don't get AHS) and just pay for the cost of repairs yourself, with the best contractor and in a timely fashion.

I have had nothing but horrible experiences with AHS. I have been a customer for 9 years now and will definitely be cancelling as soon as I research more companies. The contractors have been horrible. They don't show up for initial visit for at least a week out and many occasions it's been over two weeks. When they do show up they never fix the appliance the same day. Every contractor has had to order a part which has taken as little as 1 month to come in and as long as 2 1/2 months. I have had my refrigerator serviced 3 times, stone once, microwave once and washer dryer twice. Every time my experience has been the same. One contractor had the nerve to tell me after I waited over a... Read More

After reading all of the negative comments below I really feel the same way that everyone else does. My A/C has been out since October and they still have not fix it. The first contractor came out three times and what was not covered was $1500 from my pocket. For some reason in Georgia is has been unseasonable hot and when I turned the air on again it still was cooling, so I called again (1 hour hold) and they sent someone else out, still leaking and wanted to change me $70 to get it running. I am actually on hold with them now, probably going to change companies.
