Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Your process for customer service is got to be the worst in the world, i made a lot of efforts to let you know that i had a bad experience with united air temps and it fell on deaf ears and you still had them call me . After many weeks of this i finally got suni corporation a first class company i will use in future and refer to others. This automated service will kill your business and the rude and unsympathetic employees that work for you

After submitting a request for AC work and receiving a text and email that I would be contacted within 48 hours by Total Air, I was not contacted. After multiple calls and long wait times on hold, I was finally able to schedule service for Friday between 12 and 5. The tech showed up at 7:30 and was not able to fix the unit due to needing parts. Parts were supposedly order Monday (a full week in 90 degree weather without AC at this time). Multiple calls to both American Home Shield and Total air (including their 24 hour emergency service number) and emails to both companies during the next two weeks with wait times up to 2 1/2 hours without being able to talk to anyone resulted me... First of all it is really hard to get someone on the phone to help you. I waited (and took a screen shot of the wait time) for 45 minutes not too long ago, and then just gave up. Second, all I needed was a new garbage disposal, but when the repairman showed up (the second company, because the first never responded.) did the right thing by installing a good one (but charging me a little more - which I didn't mind) rather than the super-cheap one that AHS apparently approved. Don't get me wrong, overall, I am grateful for the coverage and the service that they provide. But, I wish that there was more "service" in their customer service. By the way, I am still being hounded for "... Read More

My daughter who is a single mom has your plan on her home. She has experienced problems as of late with her gas water heater. I reminded her of her warranty protection and she called for assistance. A few days later a plain white van (no insignia and out of state tags) arrives as scheduled. A young man with a KLS plumbing shirt tells her it will cost approximately $750 dollars to replace the water heater in her home under warranty. The program which she purchased states that a complete replacement cost is roughly $675 without a home warranty thus the reason you should buy an AHS Warranty when you purchase a home. Well we have the warranty and we payed the $75 dollar service fee, what we do... Read More

Well for starters this site is obviously for AHS. It says within 15 days of signing up your contract is effective. Well I just signed up, It's 30 Days. Waiting to see if their customer service has improved yet. I previously dropped them because companies in my area will not do any work for them because they do not pay the contract companies that do work for them. Sadly starts the frustration with the customer because the customer wants their stuff fixed and the contractor wants to be a repeat visitor so they can actually make their money off of 1 job. The only contractors that make any money is HVAC companies because AHS doesn't really take care of customers in that perspective.... Read More

Nothing has happened in one month. I've had to spend three hours and ten minutes on the phone with AHS only to be told it's in the hands of the service people that came here. On a prior conversation with the service company they put the blame on you.

I requested repair of my a/c unit on July 11th. Had to wait a week for repair. Service charge on July 18th was $100.00 plus $85.00 for refrigerant . My son used his credit card to pay since I didn't have any money. Repairman said it needed to be seen by electrician to check a disconnect. AHS had electrician call to set appointment, another $100.00 service charge. I told them I didn't have that and was told to contact AHS and it would probably be reduced charge or none sine it was on a/c unit. I called AHS and was told that since it was still a part of the repair to the a/c unit there was NO additional charge. So I called electrician back and scheduled repair, had to wait a week July... The fact that I have to wait on hold for over an hour and no one answers the phone is ridiculous. The online options are a joke. The repair company had reported that they tried to reach me unsuccessfully. I was blown away when I saw that comment online. I had been at home for almost 2 days ... waiting on a phone call ... waiting on them to show up to repair my A/C. And then the chat window is a real joke! No one ever came onto the Chat Window either. I FINALLY reached someone at the repair person's office after calling for hours. It's sad that I could not reach a person at American Home Shield. If you're not going to hire staff to answer the phones at least update the website... Read More
