Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

American home shield came highly recommended and unfortunately I was left disappointed. Each time I requested repair AHS was quick and efficient at scheduling the repair. The down side is after two years of paying out of pocket for constant refrigerant charges AHS shield was never able to repair my central air. Even thought this issues has been ongoing AHS made now attempt to correct the deficiency. I paid enough in service fees and refrigerant costs to buy and entirely new system.

We are so happy that we received an American Home Shield Home Warranty with the purchase of our new home. We've had 3 service requests, one of which was a faulty furnace which was replaced. It saved us so much money. Their response time and the service level of the contractors has been top notch.

I am pleased with the items and degree to which things area covered. The annual fee and the serVice fee are high compared to other home warranty providers. I would still recommend AHS to the others that are out there. I had serVice calls twice. One experience was fabulous and the other was very, very poor. That is shut a cannot rate for 5 stars

I continued to get shuffled around between contractors. I was advised by the contractors that AHS was not going to honor my contract by replacing my furnace.

I am totally dissatisfied with the service that I have received fro American Home Shield and Harbor Air. I have had NO Air Conditioning for 2 weeks. I have had to call both American Home Shield and Harbor Air several times only to be told that they would follow up and get back to me. I'm still waiting. I have never received such service from American Home Shield or any of the contractors that they have sent to my home. I'm still waiting for my problem to be resolved.

The Contractors AHS uses are fine. Mostly capable, timely, and professional. American Home Shield, however, was terrible. The customer service was awful: terribly long wait times when calling in; lack of follow-through on the results of phone conversations. We did not begin to see any positive movement until I posted a negative review on the AHS Facebook page. Only then did someone reach out to us and actively take part in trying to solve the problems. We will not use American Home Shield again, nor will we recommend AHS to others.

I have used American Home Shield numerous times without a problem. However, when my AC stopped working (bad compressor) I had to pay out of pocket 525$ because they didn't cover but 10$ of the 85$ per pound (I needed 7) for the Freon. I was told it would get "contaminated" changing the compressor. It also took 9 days to repair. I ended up having to shell out another 260$ for a portable AC to use will waiting. For something so common as a bad compressor, I thought they would have better service, that didn't cost a lot (it's why I got the warranty) and would have a faster turnaround. I am still going to use them, don't get me wrong. They were great on all my other repairs...

We have been members of American Home Shield for two years. We have had three (water heater, A/C, electrical) repairs successfully taken care of by AHS. Each time, I arranged for service technicians on the AHS website. I was then contacted by the service providers. The process was very easy. I only have to pay $75 for each service call and AHS covers the rest. I highly recommend American Home Shield.

The summer of 2017 I had numerous A/C issues. I had 2 units and only 1 had a problem. The first company came out & replaced the room capacitator. About a week later, I had yet another problem with the same unit. The same company came out. Within a few days, I had another problem. The motor had come loose and the fan blade came off and reaked havoc inside the unit. A different company came out and took lots of pictures and documented the extensive damage recommending a unit replacement. AHS said no, not unless it's leaking. The tech it was not, however he never checked the unit in the attic so how would he know? The fan blade was replaced a few days later. About a week or 2 went by and yet... Read More
