Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I have been withe AHS for too many year & I have had goog experiences as well as alot of bad ones with their choice of repair companies. I've had too many repeat repairs & even theft. But what gets me most is they cancelled my policy without notice & when I called them to reinstate the policy they informed me that the premium had more than doubled in price. I haven't had a claim in three years. Why??? I refered so many friends & family to this company but will definitely advise them to look for another warranty company.

Not reliable... , not reachable, not responsive, not responsible. I called for service. Was given a confirmation number and a contractor who was supposed to contact me. I received an email confirmation from AHS. The contractor did not call me. I called them, multiple times for over one week. No response. I called AHS multiple times as well. No response. Finally, after about 10 days, I reached AHS. They said they had no record that I had requested service. I had the confirmation email. They said, "well let's start over." I said no, and cancelled the contract. The sent me a refund, less a fee and prorated (NOT from the date I first called for service, but from what appeared to... Read More

On Thanksgiving day 2016 the home I warranted was rented and I received a call from my renter that the oven wasn't working. I contacted AHS immediately and was told since it was a holiday there wouldn't be able to service the warranty until Monday. (Not Saturday since they did not consider a broken oven an emergency.) The following Monday they made an appointment for two days later and went on that day for an inspection. The repairman they sent couldn't find parts, neither could the next repair contractor...and on and on. The oven was not a standard size and the cabinetry would not fit a standard size. Two months later, they told me they'd pay for a standard size replacement from... Read More

Beware! My A/C stopped working on Thursday, we called and reported that it wasn’t working. We received an email that our claim had been given to a third party and if we didn’t hear from them within 24 hours to contact the company. When we contacted the company my wife discovered that they don’t service our area. After being on hold for 40 minutes and informing American Home Shield that the company would not service our claim, the claim was given to another company. When we contacted them we were told that they would not be able to service the A/C until Monday because their tech doesn’t work on weekends. I called back and was on hold 48 minutes only to be told that there was nothing... Read More

the issue was my pool pump system was dead. Place a repair request and quickly got an appointment from a service company. Service company quickly identified the issue AND provided a temporary manual work around. Approval on the work order was received quickly. Had to wait for a replacement part but the temporary workaround meant no green pool while awaiting the fix. Once the part arrived the service company quickly implemented the replacement and the system is fully functional again. The whole process was efficient and and painless. Great to have AHS for for unexpected issues.
