Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

The tech was rude, refused to provide the summary of issues and he was not helpful and dismissive of our concerns. Have not been able to get in touch w/AHS to discuss (on hold for 1 hr 3 separate times). The electrical box is melting with no help.

This is literally the worst customer service I have ever received. Our AC was leaking and we called AHS (first time to ever call during our 1.5 yrs) on 7/14 only to be put on hold for a total of over 2.5 hours before reaching someone. Once we finally did reach someone we let them know we contacted another company and asked if we could get reimbursement. They just called today, 5 days later, and the woman was so rude that we will be canceling our contract. She referred over and over to the contract letting us know secondary damage isn't their problem and it was clear she could care less. When you pay for a service you expect it to be done right, but overall customer service is so much... Read More

I am in the process of exploring my options for a Home Warranty and was very disappointed to read all the negative reviews. I am that consumer that actually reads customer reviews beforehand. To send non-renewal notices for simply expressing concerns (online). That is exactly why consumers read reviews, to see how companies handle situations. AHS you failed! However, that is not the only thing that concerned me......your extended hold times are a major concern as well.

Using AHS is one of the best decisions that my family has ever made. We no longer worry when something goes "wrong" with an appliance or function of our house. $100 covers each visit and parts and, the vast majority of the time, that is MUCH less than repair otherwise plus service fees, etc. would have cost. We have needed their services 5 times now and I have been more impressed every time we contacted them. Plus...how can you put a pricetag on peace of mind? #gladwefoundAHS

Consumer beware. They do not value their customers and have some of the worst costumer service policies including 90 minute hold times, constant rerouting of the call, no response to other contact methods, no explanation for what services and coverage details. This company has so many contract loopholes. When they say they cover all components that is often not the case. Make sure to look at the G1 section of your contract - it allows them to pick and chose what they will cover.

Super easy service. Fast repair. No issues at all. Very qualified technician sent to our house. Really great experience with American Home Shield. Highly recommend. We were a previous customer of Choice Home Warranty and quickly discovered that they do not have high quality companies backing up their warranty program. American Home Shield not only deals with high quality repair businesses, American Home Shield's customer representatives are obviously well trained and very helpful.

AHS is the worst!! It took them almost 6 months to get a competent plumber to service my hot water heater. I lost numerous hours of work waiting around for the contractor that never showed up. The contractor came out to my house at least 10 times and still didn't properly fix the problem. Not until I called the executive office and demanded that they send a reputable company did I get the problem solved. Oh and I mysteriously got a letter after I complained that they weren't renewing my contract. Be prepared to fight many battles and waste lots of time.
