Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Phone consultants were unable to deal with a service company that refused to bring back my parts and complete the repair. SR Executives dealt with it quickly once I figured out how to escalate. 1. Management of the service base does not exist 2. No escalation process exists for the customers. 3. All repairs have been completed but the process takes some work and patience.

I have been calling American Homeshield since April to get my dishwasher/garbage disposal fixed. I have called 3 separate times and the last time, I spoke to a supervisor. He told me that per the notes, I never asked for a service request. Dude! Why else would I be calling? They had supposedly put a work order in and sent an email about the company who would be contacting me. They even suggested that I call them myself. I 've left messages with both companies that they gave me the #'s for. I still haven't heard from either company nor AHS! I will be consulting an attorney to see what I can do about this. I'm paying a lot of money per month for their sorry services and cannot get anything... Read More

We have AHS coverage since we moved into our current house over 2-years ago. Overall AHS coverage and service has been really good, so far they have us covered on all the items we have reported for service since we started using them--over 15 service calls and counting. The negative side is that they keep changing service providers every year, so some consistency issues are expected depending the contractor that would be assigned to your case. All in all I would recommend AHS to any family or friend. Thanks!

I have had someone out for my airconditioner now 3 times. Last time they sent 2 companies. The first one said I needed a new fan motor and then loosened the valves on the gas, He then said he would order the part. The 2nd co came the soon after and said it was not the fan and charded me megabucks to replace gas and said the last guy opened valves. Why should I have to pay for the gas when they screwed up.

I'm currently on hold with AHS for the last 30 Minutes. This is my third time calling today! I called earlier and was on hold for 20 minutes and was disconnected (or Hung up on). I called right back and was on hold for nearly an hour when I got an operator. I was disconnected again and that time I do believe it was some mistake from the operator. The reason I'm on hold in the first place is to dispute a $75.00 deductible that I already disputed last time I called AHS and was on hold for almost an hour. The operator I spoke agreed I should not be charged and just needed to confirm my problem was resolved with the plumbing company. They also set me up to have auto pay for my deductible,... Read More
