Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I appreciate the value, however, it can take a long time for service providers to respond. 3 to 4 days with no a/c or water is too long! I recently paid out od pocket for a plumber because I couldn't wait, no one even contacted me from AHS for 3 days after my request!

American home shield has been with us through thick and thin. Two pool pumps, plus major plumbing on the pool equipment, not to mention the new pool heater Rheem no less. Two refrigerated air coolers, microwave repair, refrigerator repair, washer and dryer repair, plus dishwasher repairs. Plus fixing the 1984 heater unit. Works like a charm. They have fixed toilets, broken outside water spigots, and replaced numerous parts on water heaters, not to mention completely rebuilding a fancy gas fireplace unit in the bedroom. They have saved us thousands of dollars out of pocket and are always there whenever I call. Love the people they send out and they even let me follow them around and... Read More

Most recent repair of AC was just like all the other service requests...prompt, courteous, with the customers needs in mind. They arranged for quick service on my AC. Good thing as it was 118 degrees. I've had other home warranty companies, but AHS is by far the best!

Had a water heater go out. Paid the $100 fee to have a company come and take a look. End result was paying an additional $500 to have it installed. They told me the new water heaters are different sized than the old. It was! A whole whopping 1/2 inch shorter! The new piping installed could be purchased at Home Depot for $20 or less, but they charged me $500. Not cool, as I could have purchased a new water heater for about the same, and isn't that what I'm paying insurance for???

I used AHS for 14 years. The service was good - responsive. However, the equipment (a/c) that was put in several years ago was not as efficient as we would have liked. I wish that AHS would have said, this is how much we will spend on your unit replacement and if you wanted to upgrade, here is what we can do. Since then, I have had to replace one fairly new unit and the older one. I no longer need the service. The service met the needs of what we purchased for - nothing more.

My refrigerator had to be replaced . My claim was resolved quickly and efficiently. My only complaint is the AHS wanted to give me a black or white refrigerator when mine was stainless steel. Offering mismatched appliances is ridiculous. I got a better appliance replacing the item myself and getting a reimbursement.

American home shield is johnny on the spot ( you can contact them via phone or internet easily) whenthey selling a warranty. HOWEVER, once you are under contract the customer service is the abysmal at best!!!!!!! For starters I was locked out of my online account. When I would attempt to reset it via online; the procedures didn't work. I called for two days on six different occasions trying to speak to someone following the phone prompts. Three of the times, I was on hold for over 45 min -1 hr; subsequently just hanging up in frustration. Finally I called the SALES PROMPT on the phone and was able to speak to a sales associate in 30 sec!!!!!! However, because I wasn't buying a new policy,... Read More

Love this company - I've used them for 3 different homes in both IL and MN and they have always come through for me. If the appliance/item cannot be fixed it has been replaced (approved quickly by AHS) and the different service providers have been great.

So far our service has been awful. We received our AHS plan as part of a home purchase. Our first encounter was after a basement flood. We were out of the country so my Mother had to deal with the issue. We didn't, admittedly, follow the instructions and schedule a service call through AHS as my Mother wasn't aware of the plan. As a result, when submitting for reimbursement, we were denied coverage. Any coverage! I understand AHS wanting to control costs by coordinating their own contractors but they could have help with some portion of the $700, covered expense. Now, our A/C unit is malfunctioning. This time we call for service just like we were supposed to and were told a contractor... Read More
