Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I really like American Home Shield. It is the second house I have used it with however I think that the copay of $75 should be reduced as you pay x amount of dollars every month and many times never use it the different companies that are representative of what you need are always very professional and very courteous.

We had our air conditioner stop working the second night in our new home. I promptly pulled up our American Home Shield warranty online and opened a claim. It was easy and the repair company contacted us the following morning to schedule a time to come out. We received text updates from American Home Shield and the repair company was professional and worked quickly to get our air conditioner back up and running. We were very relieved to be able to count on AHS!

Repairs for my washer have not been completed even though all parts ordered have arrived. Hopefully will be done on July 12th. I don't understand why consumers have to wait weeks before having repairs done on their appliances

When you call AHS, the tape recorded message answering states that the appointment for service is a mutually agreed upon time, between homeowner and service company. My experience was the opposite. I was told when I HAD to be at my property, based upon the convenience of the service company, when it was not a convenient time for me personally. I made arrangements to be at the house, and then the service company doesn't even show up during the window time of arrival. Stay away.

Called on Thursday 7/6/17 to report a problem with A/C system. Received text message from AHS informing me that A-US Air Conditioning of Texas (US Air) would be contacting me within 24 hours to schedule an appointment. Received another text an hour and a half later informing me tat an appointment had been scheduled for today (Sat. 7/8) and provided link to their website for more info. Website info said rep would contact me the day before re time. No contact from them, so I attempted to contact US Air when they supposedly opened at 8 am this morning. No answer, so I left voice message. No response, so I called again at 9:40. It is now 12:35 and no response. In the interim, I attempted... Read More

Good coverage but bad communication. I have tried to get a charge removed from my account that I paid for at the time of service. I waited on the phone for over an hour and thought it was taken care of only to see the charge is still on my account. Frustrating.

The providers with whom AHS contract have all been good and prompt. The main problem is AHS does not hire enough people to man the phone calls so that every you call the automated recording says :There is high call volume at this time." Then you wait often up to 30 minutes to speak with a person. Of course tell repeatedly to go to their website. However there are times when you have questions that can not be answered on the email system. PLEASE HIRE MORE STAFF and the problem would be solved. Also, sometimes the automated system does not understand my answers and I speak VERY clearly.

I liked the vender that was working with me on my hot water heater which by the way took over a week and a half of vender coming out four times and at last was allowed by American home shield to replace the 11 yr old item .they like to put bandaids on items rather than replace them when they should. One day I was on the phone almost three hrs. And never had anyone respond. They at least could provide a system when they are busy that lets you leave a tele. number and call back when they can. Customer service is non existing. Would not recommend American Home Shield. Forgot to mention when it comes to collecting money they are johnny on the spot.

I had AHS for years. I finally cancelled after years of sub par repairman always trying to find reasons why they are not responsible or reasons to refuse service. ALSO they limit the amount they will pay for AC and will not repair noisy AC compresser even if it sounds like jack hammer.
