Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

In general, American Home Shield does what it says it will. When I have a problem with one of my covered items/appliances, I file a claim, and they send someone to fix it (and I pay the deductible). In terms of them getting things fixed eventually, yes, this always happens for the claims I have filed. However, I've been dissatisfied with a number of aspects of how the process of repairing household appliances works with American Home Shield. First of all, when I file a claim, it usually takes a repair company a few days to contact me to make an appointment, and then usually a few more days for them to come out to my house to begin the repair process. If the appliances were of trivial... Read More

This is absolutely the worst service from any warranty company , we fought these people for 33 days with up to 120 degree weather. Could not get our Ac repaired , just excuses and a run around. They lie from one call to another, have no sense of urgency could care less about their customers. We finally had it repaired on our own total loss 5,000. Do not recommend this company save your money.

I am not at all happy with the customer service or business practices of this company. I thought this warranty would provide convenience and the comfort of not having to break the bank each time there was in issue in my home. That has not been the case at all. Their contract services ended up marking up prices and attempted to charge for items I didn't even need. This is not for anyone who expects timely repairs, ease of use or good customer service.

My 61 year old father-in-law has been without air conditioning for 5 weeks in the New Mexico desert where we've had temperatures in the triple digits. He notified American Home Shield when it first went out. There was a contractor there that could fix it that day, but American Home Shield said they had a preferred contractor. After realizing, more than just a few days later, their preferred contractor was too busy, they had someone from almost 2 hours away go to fix it. Wrong parts were ordered and/or damaged leaving my poor father-in-law living in a virtual hell because of American Home Shield'safety carelessness. He's forked over $700 for crane service to lift the a/c. He's paid what... Read More

My pool pump broke and someone was out the same day to fix it which I didn't expect. They fixed the problem in less than an hour and the pump was back to normal.

I think the company is ok. But the contractors they hire are not qualified. Trying to get in touch with them takes more patience than one should be expected to have. The average hold time is 45- 55 minutes every day. I have been a member since 2001 and never really had to use them until recently and am sorry I invested 16 years of monthly payments in them, As of this date, I have been without a working refrigerator since June 7, 2017 with no resolve in sight.

We purchased a home with multiple problems, The home inspection was by a sister company. It has taken weeks to get something repaired. The evaluation process, then approval process, then ordering parts from "approved" vendors, is very tedious. Phone calls take over 40 minutes to connect. The only things that work currently are AC and heating units that an outside vendor installed, since the AHS people were not given permission to do the right thing. The damage caused by AHS not fixing a problem, drywall damage, flooring etc. so far is over $3,000. We are still without AC in our bedroom wing.
