Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I have used your A/C people. When I contacteed your office about the problem I was told I had to wait 5 days for relief from extraordinary warm weather. I felt it was an emergence but was told to wait. We wound up having to purchase an new system costing us $5,000 with AHS only providing $700 to the project. I called again about a toilet repair and was told again I had to wait 5 days until someone from out of town, Hers and His Plumbing could get around to fixing the problem. I didn't wait but had the repairs made and paid for them myself. Your statement that you provide quality and timely service is incorrect in that it is not timely at all. There was no empathy from the responding... Read More

I have had AHS for several years now, based upon their partnership with Wells Fargo. I had never used the service, however. We came home one afternoon, and heard some popping sounds, coming from our outside A/C unit. I was going to call my usual contractor, and then remembered that I had AHS, and decided to give them a try. I called, and the service person was very cordial, and said that they were not going to charge me, until the contractor got there. Next day, the contractor showed up, found the problem with a wire, working its way loose, and arcing. The contractor was based out of an office, about 50 miles away from me, and he had a couple of stops in my area for the day. This is... Read More

My central A/C stopped cooling around last week of July. My family spent the next 5 days waiting for technician to come out to check system due to the overwhelming calls they didn't have enough tech's for everyone unless you had a baby or elderly living with u. Bottom line, it took AHS 6-7 weeks for them to somewhat fix our A/C. 1st visit, the technician came out with muddy boots and yes from the front door to the back door tracking mud on carpet, he should've gone to backyard thru the gate outside! We waited a week for a supervisor to check system himself before giving approval to order part/s..2 weeks for part to come in...another week before they could come out and install, this time I... Have had good and poor experience with AHS over the years. Recent experience was it. Had terrible service with pipe leak and lack of concern for urgent service need resulting in large out of picket expenses and property damage. I will not renew.

This company is just plain awful. Their contractor did not run the correct tests on our a/c unit and had to come back a second time. I am now waiting to find out what my buy-out offer is on the a/c unit. They can't call me when they determine that information-I am somehow supposed to divine when they have reached a decision and then call them to find out what it is. I have tried that three times now and each time waited endlessly on the phone before hanging up. Their customer service is truly horrific, and yet their message on hold continues to tell me how much they value me as a customer-yeah right!

First most of their technicians are ill equipped to handle all but the basic repairs. It appears that their sole function is to to do minimal repairs and deny claims. When they finally agree to a replacement item they attempt to sell you an appliance that they overprice as compared to Home Depot or Loews. Also when you call in on their 800 number wait times up to 45 minutes or longer are common place.

Called today because we're selling our house and I needed to cancel our warranty. I WAS HOLDING FOR OVER 20 MINUTES BEFORE SOMEONE ANSWERED THE PHONE!!! This is absolutely ridiculous. If it's THIS hard for basic account service, there's no way in HELL that I'm ever going to use this service again. Heaven forbid I actually need to make a claim! And when someone FINALLY did answer the phone, she was speaking so quickly and monotonously that I could only understand about every third word.👎💩 Absolutely TERRIBLE customer service.

I have been having so many problems with my 15 yr old fridge. It has been repaired 4 times over the last 9 months. I have to had to wait for months for each repair to happen. After waiting for a week, today a technician came by and said they cannot do anything and left. Now I am supposed to wait for who knows for how long for someone else to come and look at the fridge. When you call customer service you have to wait for a minimum of 30 to 50 mins before someone talks to you. When you ask for a manager you have to be put on a manager call back list. who knows when they will call you back. This has been incredibly bad service from a company that says they are the best. In this day and age I... Read More

we were giving this warranty from American Home Shield when we purchased our home and it has been a god send. We didn't realized how many appliances in this house were getting ready or already had failed. For a small $75.00 fee per incident we were able to get most of it fixed or replaced. That being said, the complaints that I have were with some of the companies that were sent out to do the repairs. Some were absolutely great and some didn't really know what they were doing or didn't want to do the work.... couldn't tell which. The other complaint was with customer service. It was very hard to get an answer if there was a specific question you needed answered. Either you were... Read More
