American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Can I leave a zero stars? After being on hold for an hour + this time....I explained that there are stores less than 30 minutes away where a hot water heater can be purchased and installed....TODAY! You have a 55 year old man and 55 year old woman carrying gallons and gallons of scalding water through the house to pour into the tub just to be able to take a bath!! Why would you leave that risk there when you can prevent it by authorizing the contractor to purchase a unit locally? I guess if we get scalded just trying to take a bath, that's not AHS's problem, now is it? Do not purchase a warranty with American Home Shield!! I am very surprised that this company is listed as a top provideder. you wait over 2 hours for any one to pick up the phone. our air conditioner stopped working and they said they would not cover because of the filter. which is total lies. they send out repair people who will stand by their story of events so they dont have to cover any repairs.........i am cancelling my contract with this company because they are frauds

This just went from bad to worse!!! After waiting all weekend to find out what we already knew...need a new hot water heater. Contractor tells us he has to order it through AHS, another 2-3 days....MINIMUM!!! He was no hold, put on hold and disconnected!! He said to tell them if I get through to call him back because he had to sit on hold too....THE CONTRACTOR!! Then disconnected!! We have Menard's, Home Depot, Lowe's, as well as less well known lumber yards/big box retailers in our area....why are we waiting another 2-3 days for a hot water heater?? We are boiling water on our stove to clean, wash dishes and take baths. This is ridiculous! Look for another company, but stay away from... Read More

I was on line and was almost ready to sign a contract. The monthly fee of $49.99 is the plan I chose. For this very same plan, I was quoted a monthly fee of $46.24 per month. Instead of AHS's service fee of $100.00, the other company only charges $60.00 but because I am a previous customer (had a policy for our home in another state before we sold it), I asked the "on line chat representative" to check with her supervisor to see if there were any specials. She replied without contacting anyone, and stated they absolutely do not have any specials at this time and do not price match. We have had AHS for one year and recently filed a claim for the repair of our over the range microwave. The servicing company was unable to locate the necessary repair parts because the manufacturer no longer made them available. AHS notified us of this and advised that we needed a new unit. They provided a new unit with all the features we had but also gave a dollar figure that we could use to shop for a unit that we liked.We located a replacement,and had it installed.The invoice was sent to AHS and we received full reimbursement in about ten days.

I have both good and bad experiences with AHS. First, the good. Getting service through their website is easy. It saves me the hassle of trying to go through the phone book calling contractors to see if they are available. Also, I know each repair is only going to cost me $75 (in addition to the cost of the policy). There are a few problems, though. It can be very difficult to reach AHS by phone if you need to talk to someone. You will be on hold so long you will wonder if anyone is actually working there. I have a $75 service credit for a mistake AHS made. I was told that I could not apply it to a recent request made online, it had to be through customer service. I am now having problems with my air conditioner and am on hold. I was disconnected after 20 minutes the first time. I have now been on hold for 58 minutes this time. All because I was told it has to be this way to use the credit. Sounds like they are purposely trying to keep me from using what is owed to me.

Still waiting for my electrical issue to be resolved. The current company is terrible about scheduling, last time I called to schedule they DID NOT call me to come out. At some point I think reviewing some of the vendors they use would be helpful. AHS always tries to work it out and make it right! I do also appreciate the weekend my AC went out and had someone come out to repair it then submitted to AHS to be reimbursed...which they did! Much appreciated!

Poor service - each time. The "service reps" just tell you what you want to hear. Nothing is ever resolved and each time I call it is over an hour on the phone. Once a couple of weeks ago, I was on hold for 55 minutes, then on the phone with the rep for 15 when the rep asked me to hold while she called the repair company to check on my service request. When she returned to speak with me she cut me off - so an hour and 20 minutes wasted. I had to call back and start over. Then again a 45 minute hold time. When I asked this service rep if they would call me back if we got cut off - they said that they can't make outgoing phone calls. Well - how in the heck did the previous rep... Read More
