Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Terrible customer service once they have your payments coming. A/C went out last night (Wednesday) requested service this morning online. Less than a hour a contractor with AHS called to schedule an appointment. Good thing right? Well the first they have available is next Monday afternoon. Not so good, it is going to be in the mid 90's all week here in the Carolinas. I called American home shield and waited on hold for FORTY THREE minutes. The customer service people that I was finally able to speak with told me once the contact a service provider they allow them 48 BUSSINESS hours to respond! That is minimum of 6 days and a weekend before they will even consider calling another service... Read More

No issues with contractor but it has taken me 5 calls over past 2 days to just get someone to answer the customer service phone number (I waited up to 30 minutes on each call before hanging up). When I relayed this to the representative I was effectively told - tough, this is peak season and we are busy. My issues (double billing, again, of service fee and issuance of delinquency notice) was resolved politely and quickly (I hope, will check account in a weeks time to make sure they actually did what they said they would). This is not a one-off experience. The only way to contact customer service is via phone and it is horrible and frustrating trying to get through. I spent 2.5 hours... Read More

Had someone come out to my home spend less then five minute in my home looked at my Hot Water heater and said I needed a new one ask me for his $75.00 fee gave me an invoice that state need new water heater and left. He stated that some one would get back to me on installation of the new water heater. never heard anything. I call today June 15, 2017 to ask what was happening I'm told that my heater is not up to code and It would cost me $1300.00 to bring it up to code. I asked them from what form of government was it not up to code. they could not tell me.what government agency stated that it was not up to code. I asked them to send me a email that listed the code violations but they... Read More

We have used them twice this year and both times the results were positive. A replacement to our garbage disposal was done without any questions and a repair to our refrigerator was completed. Technicians were prompt and professional

This company is ridiculous. The first service I requested from them was for my dishwasher which took almost a month from start to finish for them to repair. The guy came out, looked at it, and said we'll get back to you. During that time I had to call them after 2 weeks of not hearing anything. When I asked why I have not received an update, the lady told me it is not their job to give you an update. Second time I called for my a/c and set an appointment. Later that day my neighbor took a look at it, got it to work, so I called back immediately within the same day, and spoke with someone who cancelled the service. I still ended up being charged the next day which took over a week to... Read More

Unwilling to budge on their position over whether something was covered. Instead of providing me with the reasons why THEIR contract said something was not covered, they told me, "we're not technicians." When I specifically asked about the verbiage of THEIR contract terms, they told me, "you signed a contract." Terrible company.

I've only had positive experiences with AHS since I started my policy 8 years ago. In that time I've had several appliance breakdowns and AHS has helped me to resolve them all, including situations where they purchased a brand new air conditioning unit and a brand new washing machine for me, with no extra charge to me. Needless to say, I'll continue keeping my policy up to date :-)

I have had over 19 years with AHS and I have two homes that I have covered. When I had a problem with the contractor AHS would listen and send another technician. I hope they keep up with the good service i receive. There are so many other Home Warranty companies and I keep looking in case AHS does not work out, Cross your fingers...Phillip Vanek

I have been with AHS for a year now, almost at the anvil of renewal of my contract next month. The professionalism in resolving issues is not at par with the level AHS claims whenever a redressal or resolution is sought. In my case there was a wrong show of a technician and the vendor has slapped a service fee when I disagree on the service appointment date. I have been asked to follow with the vendor and the vendor tells me it is AHS that needs to be contacted. All in all, I'm completely frustrated with this exposure where there is scant respect for the customer.
