Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I have used American Home Shield for nearly 6 years now, and after having been provided the worst service I have ever had, am switching companies.Their customer service is beyond horrible. If you ever need to reach them I hope you have an eternity to sit on hold. They make no apologies for their lack of customer satisfaction.

I have been very pleased with American Home Shield... The promptness and quality of service is unparalleled! They always send the best technicians to do the work and they are all prompt, courteous and extremely knowledgeable. My daughter recommended AHS and I am so glad we have signed up with them... They have never disappointed in any way! I would recommend them to anyone, and in fact, have recommended them to my friends and other family!

Worst claim experience I’ve ever had. My recommendation is to never purchase a policy from this sham of a company. A bearing in my heat pump went out and squeals like a cat dieing when it spins down. Placed a claim. Service company, Temp-a-cure Inc in Oregon City, OR (another terrible company, never returns a call) came to diagnose the problem. Tech wrote that the bearing in the motor is bad and motor should be replaced. Scheduled to have the motor replaced (took 3 weeks) from 10:00-12:00. Took half day off work to be available. At 11:35 a AHW claims rep called to tell me they are not approving the replacement because the heat pump has not totally failed and the unit still... Read More

Called the company to fix a leaking coil. Representative stated they would not fix it because the unit was over 15 years old, which it is not, after I informed the representative. The representative then stated that the unit was out of warranty. Total rip off company. They will not honor their plan. Do not purchase a plan with them.

I called AHS to have my Casablanca ceiling fan fixed because the fan only had 2 of the six speeds working. The first electrician never showed up and the second electrician took the fan apart and decided he had ordered the wrong parts. He tried to put the fan back together but failed. I called AHS explaining that now my fan did not work and they told me that they don't cover secondary damage - tough luck. Then they sent out another electrician who took the motor and said he could fix the fan. I called AHS to verify and was told that they would cover $175.00. Months went by and after several calls to AHS the electrician called me to tell me he could not pick up the fan because I had... Read More

They would not pay the service company enough to fix our Air conditioner. The service company said that they could not fix it. AHS said we will give you the money. It was $1300 to replace the Air Conditioner that even having a back yard service guy put one in was over $3000. This was in Phoenix so obviously we needed an air conditioner but being on Social Security we did not have the money. We ended up selling the home to a dealer because no one would buy it with no air. Would not recommend then to my worst enemy.

AHS has given me peace of mind knowing when a covered item breaks, I will receive prompt action from the service company. The ease to request service via AHS website is terrific. Once the request is submitted, usually within 24 hours I receive a call to schedule an appointment. Since I have been a customer, I've had air conditioner, microwave, toilet and faucet issues fixed satisfactorily. I recommend this company especially for single women who are cautious about having strangers in their home.

I am an AHS customer for over three years. Their service used to be good back then. They were 5* and now they are 0*. Here is my experience in the last four calls: 1. They send their contractor but the contractors are not happy people. You can see that from their face. 2. If the contractor find that something needs replacement, their first reaction is to badmouth AHS because the tough time they are going to get. 3. For replacements, they can send a second contractor with the agenda to say that the first one was wrong. I feel like they do this for legal purpose to show that they rejected a service call based on technical advice. 4.It took me weeks for getting a single service done and... Read More

Service contractors can take 2 weeks to get a service call for washer; had to call in a repairman and pay for it myself; could not wait 2 weeks for tenant to have clean clothes. Online scheduling for Sears, able to pick date and time, but service call never scheduled. Keep repairing a 12 year old dishwasher and have more $$ into the repairs than it would have cost to replace. CS (Deedee was excellent!), but overall lacking in contractors and ability to fix things in a timely manner. I have 2 homes with AHS and shopping for a new plan.

American Home Shield has a contract that looks good on the outside but far from good on the inside. We recently purchased a new home, one day the garbage disposal goes out, the next day, the microwave stops working. The old garbage disposal was a three-quarter horsepower (hp) designed to handle the food waste appropriate for kitchen of our size. The unit needed to be replaced and American home Shield vendor plumber put in an economy garbage disposal which was one quarter hp. For the $75 charge, we will get some use out of the garbage disposal but unless we extend the contract, This inferior unit will have to be replaced sooner than later. American Home Shield will replace your defective... Read More
