Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

HVAC work during the cold, over the winter. Slow to respond, difficult to get on the telephone, company never returned to repair the item and we had to get an outside company to make the repair and then fight with AHS to get our repair costs reimbursed. Seriously considering not renewing.

Contacted company regarding a needed repair; never heard from anyone after three days. Called back to get the name of the company (you'd think that they would check these companies/contractors out since they're using them), and proceeded to contact the company directly. They could not have anyone out for another week! What the hell is that suppose to mean for me? Contacted American and they're response, '..there was nothing they could do.' Needless to say (1st, and last call to American), this and an incident experienced with a neighbor of mine (the technician sent to her home robbed her of jewelry and prescription drugs; nothing done by the company used by American, nor by American... Overall, AHS has been excellent - until the last request. It took a week to get service - three calls to AHS, no response from provider and after visit, provider promised to call and follow up with other necessary service to solve the problem and did not follow through. He simply did not have the part. So...overall excellent - would have been five stars. The last poor service lost AHS a star. Hope that the next service will be a better experience.

American Home Shield sent a contractor out to repair my wife's dryer. The technician was totally unqualified to perform the work. He could not diagnose the issue and left stating there was nothing wrong., After multiple calls we had AHS send our a technician from another company who properly diagnosed the issue and repaired the dryer. I am disappointed that American Home Shield did not do a better job of vetting (investigating) the companies they choose for their technical service, We wasted a lot of time getting the repair done properly. When I called AHS customer service they were not willing to listed to the concerns. We will NOT use them again.

Trying to get service for a freezer that stopped working overnight.Called early Thursday.First time they can get someone here in late Monday afternoon. All my food is gone.Hundreds of dollars. Answer was read your contract. Not responsible and we do not consider this an emergency.48 hrs is what your contract states. So in spite of paying every month have a $125.00 deductible ,food lost this contact has been a disaster. The woman was so rude she needs lessons in customer care. I would give them a 0 if I could.

Have subscribed to AHS service since 1993 and have found it to be an invaluable insurance against heavy service charges, especially since I have been in an older home with all the attendant maintenance problems. They do just what they say, pay excellent licensed repairmen everything over the one-time service charge I pay--all parts and labor included. Many times I have had replacements or buy-outs when the item could not be repaired. Very easy to work with, trustworthy and dependable. Wonderful peace of mind insurance for, in my case, $38 a month.

You have to work with them and be prepared to fight, finagle, haggle and wait, but if you do, most likely, you will make out good.!!! It's worth having!

Just dropped them, they sent out a company to fix my washer machine and took 3 days for them to come out. Then they said they had to order a part and it would take another 3 day but after 3 days I called and they said it would be a week for the part to come in. I spoke with AHS and they said that they already dispatched it to that company and they could not do anything. I cancelled my contract with them and went and bought another washer machine out of my pocket. I would never use this company again.
