Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Everything went well from making the service call to getting a vendor to my house to look at my garbage disposal. He was able to fix it instead of replace it and he even put up with my nosey dog who needed to always see what he was doing. I don't remember the vendors name, good nice guy!

We needed our dishwasher fixed and making the appointment on line was seamless. Within 24 hours we received a call from the repair service and they arrived on time the next day. We needs to order a part and when it arrived they installed it and the dishwasher is working perfectly.

My kitchen faucet broke and I was expecting the worse. AHS was able to provide me with a competent and professional plumber in a timely manner. The faucet guts were replaced and we were up and running in no time. It was a very good experience.

When my central a/c stopped working, I immediately called customer service. The rep told me that I should expect to hear from the a/c tech shortly. The repair tech called me within hours and made an appointment to come to my rescue. He arrived on time and in short order had my a/c back in working order.

My most recent issue was resolved very quickly. My a/c wasn't kicking on. It turned out that I needed to replace my thermostat. It was replaced quickly, and I haven't had any issues since.

Am Home Shield is hard to raise by phone. Their user portal is pretty good but leaves no room for comments towards specific issues. I had a kitchen faucet that was frozen up and would not move from on sink to next. Also the combo sprayer would not disengage from body of faucet. Since the water still flowed threw, they deemed this functional. I had them comr out three times to not cover this! They spent more money denying a kitchen facuet that was broken for something that should be covered. It would have been better to know that this would not be covered prior to wasting time and being 3 weeks out of service of faucet. Phil.

I got the policy for my Mom on line. I was told it wouldn't be effective for 15 days, the 1st payment would be the 28th. I said I would purchase it it a few days so the date could be the 31st; I was told that wouldn't be a problem, she would change the date for me. That didn't happen. I called to change the payment date. I received a call letting me know that they could change the date, but that they would be taking a payment the 29th AND the 30th. No explaination as to why - just they had to do that. I canceled the contract. There was no mention of cancellation fees so it will be interesting to see if anything else occurs.

I had a problem with my heat pump not coming on when it should have. I submitted a work request and the HVAC contractor called within an hour of submission. They were unable to get to me until 2 days later but that is understandable. They arrived and checked everything and found nothing wrong. Possible glitch with the thermostat and maybe moisture in the control wiring but could not duplicate. Tech was very knowledgeable and gave his input. Excellent service!!!
