Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Please people don't believe the reviews stating that this is the bestime warranty company. I had a problem at my home, I went online submitted a claim. Later I logged on my ahs account and it's saying contact contractor. I called contractor, which resides in dibol tx, she states they want be able to come out until the next morning, so I agreed. Now the next morning I called to find out status from ahs. Ahs called contract in dibol and contractor stated they couldn't come out until next week, after lady in the contractors office in dibol tx, personally told me from her own mouth they would be out Saturday morning. I told ahs and contractor in dibol tx, that I'm on oxygen and a future... Read More

I got my one year home warranty when I bought my home 8 months ago. Calling to put in your claim is relatively quick and easy. You are told the repair place will call and set up appointment. Three calls for repairs on dryer and never have I received a call. After the second days I end up calling the number given and am told someone should have called me. The same thing has happened after I have waited the 7 to 10 days waiting for the parts to come in. Sometimes my parts have been there for days. An already lengthy time without my dryer is extended by three to for days each time because of the repair service you send out. Perhaps a follow-up call about your service people would be helpful.

American Home Shield sucks. It has problem process payment. First, the company told me three days in a row that it couldn't process my credit card payment. When it does, it charged my contract twice on the same day without my authorization. Now, I am having difficult to ask them to credit the over payment.

I have been with AHS since 2000 but had to drop it for a short time. When finances got better I signed up again. Now I am not very happy with them. I called to have a leak from the bathroom sink pipe fixed that leaked into my breakfast room ruining the ceiling . In order to fix the pipe the plumber wanted $250.00 or $350. to take down the obstruction which I did not have. I had to make a claim against my homeowners insurance because it caused other damage they came & removed the obstruction. The plumber came back out out & fixed the pipe. I had them out back in May for a stoppage in my kitchen sink & I needed new faucets in the kitchen. The faucets were covered but I needed shutoff... Read More

In Jan 2011 my *Honey Do* person took his final journey after 48 yrs of marriage. Due his Sleep Apnea, there was No Life Ins.I am also raising 2 grandchildren with NO outside help, either in Child support or State. While discussing my finances with my youngest son, he mentioned I should get a Home Protection Plan - such as American Home Shield. It has been now 5 yrs since I am with AHS. They repaired my dryer, wash-machine, garage light, ceiling fan, REPLACED - AT NO CHARGE my Micro-wave-oven and a Refrigerator. I had the CHOICE of using the Brand I wanted and for a *little* extra charge even -upgrade- the model. My Contract ends every Sept.15th of each year. AHS Service Fee is $ 75... Read More

The last 2 service providers AHS has sent us have not been quality providers. One, for our furnace, closed our case before the issue was resolved. AHS would not work with us to help get it resolved. For a 2nd issue, our AC, they've again, provided us with a poor service company. When I spoke with the AC company about scheduling, I was so disappointed with that initial contact that I reached out to AHS for help and they refused. The AC company scheduled us 4 days (plus a weekend) out. AHS policy states they should see us within 2 days. They were not professional with me on the phone either. AHS rep would not allow us to be assigned a new company. I suggested I may need to be looking for a... Read More

This is a horrible company, you are here to take premiums yet not provide a service. Have wasted so much time trying to get things fixed and some how there is a loop hole that denies coverage. I would not recommend this company to any buyer and I wish I had not purchased the insurance and I am cancelling.

My advice to anyone is to NOT become a customer of this agency. My case is probably like many others in that they refused to cover the simplest of items. They charge top price and the co-pay is also above the others. I have old wiring. My first problem was a circuit breaker stopped working for my dryer. I replaced the dryer only to learn it was the old breaker. This time my wife and I were in our living room with only one other light on and the breaker cut the circuit. It was an old circuit breaker and it had two circuits attached to it. American Home Shield interpreted this as being an overload. If it were an overload, why didn't it break 20 years ago or 10 years ago I was broken now.... Read More
