Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

The telephone response time is awful. I called twice to make a service request. I took 48 minutes for an associate to answer the phone. After another 12 minutes I hung up on her because she just did not understand English and would talk over me, not letting me explain my request. Very disappointing and frustrating. I called a second time and again waited for 45 minutes before someone answered the phone. Totally unacceptable and unprofessional . Fortunately, this time the associate was excellent and I was able to proceed with my service request. The contractor provided, Sunbelt Electric was excellent and I would highly recommend them.

Terrible. Our AC went our June 2. We are in Hawaii and the house is in the 80's. We are both at home as we are in high risk health and can leave this hot house. They sent out when repair guy. Two weeks later they sent out a second company for a second opinion. Then they closed both tickets and we keep waiting on hold to try to talk to someone about our AC that was never fixed.

We have been American Home Shield customers since 2014. I have been very disappointed the last several times I have called for repairs. I waited over 40 minutes on hold and then was told my wait time would be at least 45 minutes more. The second time I waited over 30 minutes to speak with customer service. This is not what we are paying for. The provider assigned to repair my ice maker was Sears. They gave me a date (06/10) and a window from 9 to 5. I stayed home and at 4:20 they sent a text saying my appointment was rescheduled for over a week later. (06/18). I called Sears and canceled immediately. Service providers like this are not acceptable.

I had to have air conditioning company out five times in six weeks and then they ignored my calls and AHS would not return calls u til it was “too late” to be a call back and I had to repay another $100 copay. Another A/C company came out, identified the problem, ordered the part and fixed my A/C with the few days it took for part to arrive and worked with us on time for repair. I would’ve given a 5 if the work was done first time and I didn’t have to pay a second time for visit.

We've been loyal American Home Shield customers for almost 20 years. However, I have never in my life been more disappointed in a company than I am with American Home Shield right now. I requested service for our hot water heater on April 25, 2020. Since then, I've made numerous follow-up phone calls and endured absurdly long hold times – I was on the phone well over 2 hours today! I have spoken with customer service representatives and the “Escalation Department” with no definite resolution and no offer to make things right. The bottom line is, 60 days later, we still don't have a working hot water heater! Today, I said “I assume it doesn't normally take 2 months to replace a faulty... Read More

I'm quite pleased with our coverage. Professionals are prompt--I've never waited more than 24hrs. The annual fee is reasonable, but you can also pay monthly with automatic debit.

My experience with AHS has been unbelievably horrible. On May 15th I requested service for my pool filter. On May 22nd the assigned service provider inspected the filter and stated it couldn't be repaired and would have to be replaced. I never heard from them again. I contacted AHS on June 1st for a status update, the representative said they would contact the service provider and get back to me the next day. I never heard back so I called again on June 8th and was told they would check with the service provider and call me back; they never called back. I called again on June 17th and was told that they tried 5 times to contact the service provider and was unsuccessful. They said... Read More

Buyer Beware We've been a customer of AHS for years. We've used it periodically throughout the years but have just cancelled it today. We mainly kept it because we had bought a home with an older set of AC units and figured they would break in the upcoming years, so having this insurance would be a good idea. The few times we have used AHS, the effort to get anything fixed was increased as you have AHS playing middleman with the service that is doing the work. But that’s not really the awful part. Two years ago, our refrigerator broke. AHS sent a subcontractor out to evaluate the issue and they determined it was just a part that needed to be replaced in the 10-year-old... Read More

Terrible customer service. They give you the runaround. Don’t return calls. They use substandard contractors. We had them for 25 years and each year it got more expensive and worse.
