Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Phenomenal company. Timely, efficient service. Contractors are professional, friendly, and knowledgeable.

Horrible company!! They do not care about their customers. Be ready to wait hours to get any customer service person to help you. Be ready to wait days and weeks to have a company they contract with to come look at the problem, only to not resolve it. We ended up having to go through outside authorization, followed all of AHS rules that they told us only to say they were denying it due to cost. I've paid over $1,600 this year to have AHS cover 2 properties i own to now have to pay $2000 for something they should cover. worthless company with no values. Cancelled both contracts.

I have had multiple policies (coverage on 3-4 houses) with AHS for several years. I am taking my business elsewhere because while AHS might offer good coverage on some items, the customer service is awful in my view. It has been my experience that many of the service contractors they assign are not very professional or they are prevented from making quick repairs due to AHS policies (e.g. AC compressor has to be provided through AHS warehouse, which takes several days to arrive). Calls to AHS routinely involve a wait of 20-30 minutes or longer, and quicker communication through email and chat aren't available. I have encountered slow service (a recent service request was over 30 days... Read More

I submitted my AC repair request a week ago today. My AC is still not fixed. I’m told by the AC company that they’re waiting on American Home Shield to approve repairs. I’m told by American Home Shield that they are waiting on the AC company to tell them what’s wrong with the unit. This is, of course, after waiting for almost an hour to be able to speak with someone at American Home Shield. So unbelievably frustrating and disappointing to be sitting in Texas heat with no AC for a week now, and no idea of when these 2 will get it together and get it fixed. Save yourself some grief and choose a different warranty company.

Great company, been with them over 20 years and am now retired woman over 70. They have repaired or replaced a great many things for me and now they are my peace of mind as and older person who is not able to fix things myself.

This is my second year with AHS. One previous job was done, a dryer issue, all good. Just recently we finished an a/c job. Contractor was fine, although there has been no follow up from AHS as to the job that was done. More importantly, for many days I have called and called AHS in order to go over the charges that I paid to contractor to ensure all is proper. It has been impossible to get a live person at AHS, no matter what day I call or the time I call. This is terrible. The longest I have waited on line was 44 minutes!!!! 44 minutes!!!! And then I gave up. Still waiting for a call back. AHS has no e-mail where a customer can reach out. I did reach out via Facebook and did get a reply... Read More

I so disappointed with American Home Shield. Have had you for over three years at the $100.00 call fee. Today is my for day to have a plumber come to my house for bathroom faucet licking and had a bad experience with the plumber sent to me. I called AHS 10 8 times and the list wait time I was on hold was over 2hours. What a shame!!!

This company is a complete 0. I have had AHS for almost 20 years and i need to find a new warranty service company. I have been left without a refrigerator for 10 days! And when i asked a manager to call me back.....Well its been 4 days and i am still waiting. I really feel i need to report them to BBB. So frustrating and they do it over and over again. Very bad follow up. Good for a clogged sink or something simple. But anything serious they will give you people who install things backwards (yes this happened with AHS) and who give wrong diagnosis requireing multiple visits and cant arrive for days on end. Its never been easy with these people. find something else save your time... Read More
