Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

American Home Shield sent someone out to help with my Air Conditioning. The worker had it up and running very quickly.

I had a horrible experience with this company. They do not seem to value the customer experience. First, their phone wait times are ridiculous. Secondly, my water heater was unable to be fixed by the technician, consequently he put in a request for the water heater to be replaced. Instead of the company reaching out to us to let us know that in order for us to move forward with the repairs we would have to pay the difference for bringing the water heater up to code, we received no contact and went without hot water without a week. The only reason we found out is because I waited on the phone for an hour to speak with a representative. Additionally, when I asked the representative to... Read More

I have been without a Dishwasher since May 11th. I am on hold for over one hour each time. I have had two scheduled visits from the repair company and they no-showed both time. AHS will not call me back. You have $1000+ of my money and you won't even call me. Horrible crooks! Do not let them rob you as well. Read the reviews on Facebook. There is ZERO way to email AHS. They only have one phone number for the thousands of customers. All three calls were answered by the same person. I am guessing only one person works in the call center... the call center that cannot resolve anything. Today is June 19th. No repairs, no follow up. Two no-show repair visits. They give you a four... Read More

Terrible service. It took more than a month to finally get someone to fix my air conditioner in triple digit heat!

Unreliable. Many administrative errors that will cost you endless amount of calls to the company. Then you search to find a service rep who understands English enough for them to correct It. I believe they outsource outside USA because some keep repeating remedies that make no sense. Aka pay for a service not rendered. As for their Vendors don’t exactly like the deal they have with AHS that you may not be 1st in their list so you end up having to wait for service. And sometimes they don’t show up and you are billed anyways. I had to hire a 2nd person to fix the issue on another call. Most recently I was charged the $100 for a plumber who didn’t show up & im still calling daily for... Read More

We are brand new to AHS. Not long after we purchase our house, the electrical plug just "blew" up! No damage, but we needed an electrician fast! I called and was told that one will be available tomorrow. Couple hours later they called us that there is one available in an hour or so. We agreed to have them send an electrician when one becomes available. About an hour later they called back that one electrician is available in about an hour! We said yes, he came, fixed the problem and everyone was happy! Thank you!

I have had AHS for over 15 years but in the last 3 years it has deteriorated. The people that they send to fix items, one says that they can fix it and then the other gets the parts and says it must be replaced. Then there is no communication in between on replacement. Also I had a hot water heater that they figured out a way to not replace but couldnt repair. I am not sure what has changed but it was stellar for the first 12 years.

I'm so glad I was able to get American Home Shield !! I have a problem with my water heater, turned in a claim on Wed( I believe) and they were here that following Tues ! The techs were helpful, courteous, very polite. Only problem was I didn't tell them it was a tankless heater ! They were nice enough to email it in for me, so I didn't have to sit on the phone, now I just have to wait while they find someone help me with it. Would recommend them to anyone, in fact I have already. Thank you so much

I found the Air Conditioning Co. Air Doc who was sent out to find my Air Conditioning problems was less than helpful in determining my Air Conditioning problem. After telling me it’s not the Air Conditioning causing the soaked carpets, I had to call in a second opinion, a “plumber.” It took the plumber looking around the base of the air conditioner closet 15 mins to identify the soft spot in the wall board below the air conditioner drain. The problem was a disjointed connection letting water run down from the drain line from the unit above me.
