Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

I do not recommend First American Home Warranty due to their replacement policy. They are not responsible for matching brand, color or dimensions, which I find absolutely ridiculous. I needed a replacement built-in microwave sized at 1.5 cubic feet. They only offered to replace the unit of a different brand and different size (1.9 cubic feet). They will not cover the cost for cabinet alterations (nor did I want this), so because the replacement unit they offered was too large my only option is to decline the replacement and take a cash out. This means that the hassle of ordering a new microwave and hiring a company to remove the old one and install the new one is all on me. Seems like that... Read More

I have found my dealings with First American Home service to be completely unsatisfactory. They have a maze of confusing methods to initial contact and follow-up. They have wait times of at least an hour, do not respond to messages and supervisor staff do not follow up or return calls or messages. The amount of time a customer spends on the phone is exhausting and unnecessary. They pretend to display care but their action display otherwise. It is impossible to talk to someone of authority. I had a claim placed with numerous delays. It took days of attempts and messages to have my claim processed. It has been a week now with no response from supervisory staff, no call back or followup.... Read More

We had a saga with our fridge for the last couple of months. We opened a claim with First American that send a technician that barley opened the fridge, said "it is a known issue with LG - you should call them", took his $75 and left. We called LG and they said that if we have home warranty, the home warranty company should send one of their licensed technician and we could get a new fridge! But this was after our contract was expired and First American said they can send another technician for free - if we renew of course. Our fridge is ding for the last couple of months, food was thrown many times. We brought another technician that said it is hopeless. So we now had to spent $1,600 +... Read More

AWFUL SERVICE!!! I called for a WATER LEAK under my washing machine. The recorder asks for the brand so I gave the brand name and they sent a contractor/technician who said there is a broken part that needs to be replaced. Ordered the part and arrived two days after. He came back (its now on its 5th day)and installed the part. And told me there is also a plumbing issue. (i found out later, that he is supposed to report that so a plumber can be sent). He left and i found out there's still WATER LEAK under my washing machine!? I am not in this trade so all i know, there's water leak underneath!! the customer service told me i have to file another claim because its a different contractor they... Read More

Overall the customer service of first american home warranty is not good. I see the following problems: First, it is very difficult to talk to a customer service representative to place a claim or deal with issues regarding a claim. You have to go through many touch tone buttons many of which return you to a previous option you had already chosen. It is very clear that they do not want to talk to you especially when it is related to a claim. Second, they seem to use the cheapest of the cheapest contractors. The bottom feeders of their particular line of work. Given my two recent bad experiences, I question the integrity and honesty of some of their contractors. I had recently two... Read More

BEWARE they will TRICK YOU INTO PAYING $75.00 FOR A WORK ORDER IF YOU CALL TO CHECK COVERAGE. They tell you that your problem/equipment is NOT covered (NOTHING IS COVERED BY THE WAY)....BUT THEN SAY.... "WOULD YOU LIKE TO USE ONE OF OUR plumbers/electricians etc. for service?" They covered nothing, THEY TOLD US IT WASN'T COVERED.....we paid the plumber in full, and then we received a bill from FIRST AMERICAN HOME WARRANTY CHARGING US $75.00 FOR CALLING THE PLUMBER FOR A SERVICE CALL TO DIAGNOSE/DETERMINE IF THE PROBLEM WAS COVERED???!!! ABSOLUTE SCAM BETWEEN CONTRACTORS AND THIS WARRANTY PROGRAM TO COLLECT EXTRA FEES. WE'VE FIXED EVERYTHING OURSELVES, USED OUR OWN... Read More

I recently received a FAHW with the purchase of our new home. Upon discovering a broken refrigerator, we contacted FAHW. After being charged a $100.00 service, a SEARS tech came out and charged us another $148.00. Only to tell us the refrigerator was broken and we needed a new one. After numerous phone calls with bad English speaking reps, we were told the refrigerator would be replaced. Well, its been two weeks, and still no replacement. Food has spoiled, many frustrating phone calls. Terrible service. Finally we were told the refrigerator is on back order. So we ended up buying a replacement on our own. What was the use in buying the warranty in the first place? Extremely dissatisfied.

I have had a warranty with First American Home Warrnty for almost 3 years. My refrigerator has been broken for 21 days. They have not been able to get a part to the repair company they are using. I am extremely dissatisfied and I would recommend not purchasing a warranty thru them.

Called in a service request in November 2019 for my instant hot water dispenser because the faucet developed a leak. They have sent out 4 different plumbing companies. Each one said that the unit is unserviceable and needs to be replaced. When I followed up with the plumbing companies, they said they were having problems with First American and their work order was cancelled. One company even got authorization from First American to order the part and replace. The plumbing company called me and said that the parts were ordered and they will set up a time to do the work. When the parts arrived, the plumbers called and we set up an appointment. When the plumber didn't show up, I called them... Read More
