Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

I recently had an irritating experience with First American Home Warranty. I filed a claim for no A/C cooling on the 14th of May. Two weeks later, I had no idea and couldn't find out, when my A/C would be repaired. After a strongly worded letter to the President of FAHW, I finally got someone who would call me back. We have been experiencing record breaking heat waves during this period. I was running four fans only to circulate hot air. A representative of FAHW offered to reimburse me for a window unit ( $100. ). I finally got my A/C repaired after three weeks of suffering, June 3, 2019. It only cost me $550. out of pocket to file this claim. FAHW's approach to a claim is like... Read More

My experience with your company is the worst I have ever had. The plumbing contractor that you sent was dishonest and rude. He did not want to fix the toilet leak, and then finally said "I will put this in jus to make you happy". When it continued to leak I had to have another plumber come and fix. Then he gave an estimate for the "EXTRA CHARGE" for replacing the water pressure valve that was "MORE" than two other estimates for the full price without the warranty coverage. This is a sham. And when the supervisor told me we would not be charged, we have continued to receive a bill for this contractors "service charge". I am an elderly woman and I felt he abused my situation and tried... Read More

Garage door spring broke. Representive Franklin three times over phone assured me broken spring was covered. Repair tech arrived and was told spring not covered. Called company and they had written record that Franklin told me that it was covered. After spending about 45 min run around company simply said sorry we made mistake and we cannot cover repair. Elderly wife had Dr apt and had to get car out of garage so had to get repair done and repair company fixed door at $347. Even though they agreed they had made mistake they simply blew me off with sorrywe made a mistake. I would not recommend them for anyone. They should honor their answer they gave me. Companies like this should not... Read More

This company was recommended to me by my parents who live in Ohio. They were very happy with it. I live in West Michigan, and I highly recommend NOT signing up for this service. They do NOT have relationships with contractors in the area, which wouldn't matter if they would just admit that up front and let me proceed on my own with the repairs. I have to wait 2-3 days for them to tell me that they don't, and that I will have to find someone myself, submit that contractor's estimate for approval, then have the work done, pay the contractor and then submit the claim for reimbursement. It took two weeks to get a hot water heater repaired, and my electrical panel is out now and I am just... Read More

First American Home Warranty has refused to replace a Rheem tankless water heater in my house because it is under warranty. However, the warranty can't be accessed because the water heater was purchased 11 years ago by a previous owner that I do not know and have no way to contact. Their own technician contacted Rheem and was told it could not be exchanged without a receipt which doesn't exist. Obviously, First American knows that I can't take advantage of the warranty. It is another way for them to get out of paying for things that the policy says it will cover. So, basically you better get the receipts of every appliance in your house when you purchase it or else First American will use... Read More

You sent a tech to my house to fix a popping noise in my garage, he came to my house & cut a bunch of wires saying I didn't need this or that & then left. So my A/C unit, flood lights, & outlets in one of my bedrooms stopped working so I called you back & argued with you for two months on how this was a existing claim thanks to the tech you sent out because everything else worked just fine before that. So I decided to cancel your services that I paid in advance for a year of $700. I still needed the problem you created fixed so your company said the only way to do that is to make a new claim, which I finally did after arguing for 2 months, being put on hold for 45 minutes & hung up on.... We have been waiting to get your repairman out to fix our ac and we can’t get an answer. It has been over a month and we live in Georgia. This is absolutely unacceptable and will be taking this to small claims court. Never will I purchase a home with a warranty. Total scam

My A/C was not cooling down. I called First America. They sent a technician from Master Tech and he checked and said it is leaking the GAS/Freon. And said the Unit must be cleaned, And gave a me quote of 10K for a new unit! He said he will call first America and will ask them what to do. He left and I see the whole 2nd floor is flooded with water. I did not have any water leak. Otherwise I would complaint for the water leak. Don't buy First American Home Warranty. They try to sell a new unit rather fix it. You will be loser!!!!!!

We had a terrible experience with First American Home Warranty. We initiated a service request on May 16, 2018 because our AC was not working. It was incredibly hot in our house as we live in Atlanta so we needed it fixed promptly. The issue was that water was collecting in our emergency pan and then shutting off the AC to prevent flooding, but we didn't know the actual source of the problem. The first contractor assigned to us never responded to our calls, and he didn't respond to First American's calls either. We are not sure to this day if this contractor exists. We called First American again and asked if we could hire our own local person and get reimbursed because we live in Atlanta... Read More
