Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

We purchased a full home protection policy for our real estate clients. The air conditional stopped working and they were told they had no air conditioner service people in the Myrtle Beach area. They NEVER returned calls and finally said our clients could get their own service with a licensed and bonded company. Two weeks later, during weather that had heat indexes over 100 degrees, our clients found a serviceman, had their system fixed and have now been told they needed further approval. The call from First American was recorded and this is a lie. Two weeks hearing lies from the company and no service in a hot area like Myrtle Beach, SC. add up to "horrible"! When asked why they had... Read More

Normally I wouldn't Voice my Opinion on social media, but this is enough. I have been dealing with First American for the past month now, talking to multiple people, being hung up on, put on hold for an hr plus to talk to someone yet never answers, and basically be given the runaround. I received a new AC system about a year ago that was not installed properly. These people don't even work with this company anymore. Now A year later i'm dealing with another issue involving my AC. In the past month I've had three different companies come out to my house to look at this issue 4 times it, all receiving the same work order saying "no cool air" which is incorrect because All four of those... My contract with them runs out in August. I am always out of town the last two weeks in August and I have failed to get my cancellation in. That won't happen this year. About 10 years of hoping they would get better and disappointed almost every time. They are a rip off. I am a Realtor and provide a list of home warranty companies to my clients on every transaction. The first thing I always tell them is .......... don't get First American. I will finally be rid of them this year. Horrible. Just Horrible.

My garage spring broke, this is a double aluminum door with the spring wrapped around a shaft to assist lifting the door. Simple right? Not! Called FAHBP they sent someone out, this guy was just a sales man not even the repair person, he went into my garage and before you know he came back with a $650 repair bill and said he would not repair my spring unless these items were replaced. He wanted to replace two panels that has a very small superficial crack and said all my bearings were bad. Now if the bearing were bad I would have let him change them but he was trying to show me bearing dust that wasn't even there. I call FAHBP and told them to send someone else and they said if the garage... Read More

It's been a month since I submitted a work order to have my cooktop repaired. I've had 2 companies out to look at it. The first one took my service fee, said they would order the parts, then disappeared. The second company came out, said they would submit the claim to these guys, and a week later we are still waiting for a response. If these guys were the only home warranty company left, I'd just take my chances and pay for repairs out of my pocket in order to get things resolved, since clearly they have no intention of fixing the issues.

The kitchen faucet hose was leaking water and the garbage disposal making loud noises while spinning. After creating a service request detailing these problems, two days later, First American Home Buyers Protection, sent a plumber to look at and not fix the kitchen faucet. I had to take a half-day away from work to meet with the plumber, I offered my recommendation that the faucet needed to be replaced. He tried to replace the hose from a part at a local store, it didn't work, and then he went back to the store to get a new faucet. At this point the job at been close to 3 hours. The new faucet chosen was significantly below the quality of the existing faucet fixture, below the quality... Read More

Worst customer service ever. This company states 24/7 service response time. We did not get a return call 48 hours after the issue was called in. I had to call a service repairman separately to avoid further damage to the kitchen. The worst part of this experience is that after we returned the contractor/repairman assigned to our case 48 hours later, we were yelled at by the person who called us. This is unacceptable and very unprofessional. I would never recommend nor use this company again. The seller of the property whom we purchased the property from should get a refund for this terrible treatment.

First American Home Buyer's Protection does ANYTHING it can do to keep from PROTECTING you and your home!!! You would be better off paying a contractor outright instead of using them! This company lies, cheats and steals from the very people that trust them!! DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!

First American Home Buyers deals with incompetent techs. First american is nice and has good employees. But the people they ask to come to your home to do the work have little clue how to do their job. I own multiple properties and at one I cancelled first home warranty because they sent a guy who tried 3 different things to fix my washer. The third thing he wanted to do was pull my dryer out of it's space and work on the back. Prior to this, I invited a solo tech to come look and he told me what he thought was the problem. That alone made sense. He came to this conclusion after looking at the paperwork I received when I bought the machine 4 years earlier. The First American Tech did... Read More
