Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

WORST SERVICE, COMPANY FLAT OUT LIED TO ME SEVERAL TIMES, RUDE EMPLOYEES. I placed a claim for my water heater. Water heater flooded my laundry room. They were supposed to have it fixed within 24 hours. NOT TRUE! They contacted plumber and plumber called to get info on my water heater. Then I waited hours and still no call back from plumber with a time they would come to my house. I contacted plumber and they said that American Home (AH) CANCELED my order! When I called AH, they told me that I canceled the order! LIE #1! I never canceled order. I took the day off of work that day to have the plumber fix replace the water heater. I have NO water! I called several times in a 3 1/2... Read More

I was completely unsatisfied. Save your money and your sanity. My Air conditioner has been broke down twice in three months. The first time the out side compressor blew up it took contractor 10 days to replace and $650 from me to pay for code upgrades and a valve to make compatible with inside air handler. The first ac repair man said he recommended both inside and outside unit needed to be replaced but FAHW ignored or refused to pay. Now three months later my inside coils are bad and its going to cost me $750 for non covered items, $150 for new Freon, and i bought two portable ac window unites $640. The worst part is that heat indexes are 104 degrees and tomorrow will be nine days and... Read More

I have been trying to call them all day and I keep getting directed to take a quick survey? When I finally took the survey it directed me to another telemarketer what kind of business is this? I called different numbers to try and get a hold of them and the machine tells me to leave my name and number. It's been over 9 hours. I am going to keep trying to reach them tomorrow.

I have a plan with First American Home warranty. My AC stop working and I called in to make a claim on Thursday morning at 9am. They assigned a company to fix my AC, and said the Company would call me. I waited all day Thursday and did not get a call. I tried to call the company at the end of the day and I received no answer. I tried calling 3 times Friday morning and no one answer the phone. I called FAHW and they tried calling the AC company they got no answer. They told me the company had 48 business hours to give me a call. I informed that I would be without AC for 5days. They sent an email to the AC company.finally he called me at 4pm Friday. I told him it was a bad fan motor. He... Read More

On Sunday 8/7/2016, I placed a claim with the automated system for a water leak in my cieling. At that time it was indicated that I would receive a call within 3 hours, and my repair would be completed within 24 hours. We are now into day 4 of this claim (more than 72 hours) and still no contractor has been assigned. I was told that someone would be arriving yesterday (Tuesday August 9) between 2 PM and 6 PM. After waiting until 5:45 I called the contractor and he stated that First American never confirmed the appointment, so he did not put me on the schedule. This leak has also caused a breaker to trip which has turned off the electricity in half of my house. So I now have no water,... Read More

When you have a major problem (central air conditioning), they are not responsive. We've been without air conditioning for almost three months. During the second month (and after a number of phone calls), we were told to hire an outside vendor to provide an estimate, which we did. They then told us we have to use the original contractor. Three weeks later, the original contractor returned and provided an estimate that duplicated what the outside vendor stated! The contractor forwarded the information to FAHW and we're still waiting for repairs. This has been a nightmare and I wouldn't recommend this company to anyone. There will be no contract renewal.

FAHW is horrible to deal with. We received the home warranty as part of the purchase of our new home. Our microwave broke on May 16. It is now August 18 and the microwave is still broken. I have to call weekly, wait on hold over 20 minutes and when I finally get a live person I am told that the representative I last spoke to forgot to order the parts or didn't process the request fully, etc. We are now over 90 days of a broken appliances which is supposed to be covered under warranty. I thought having the warranty would bring me peace of mind...instead it has brought nothing but aggravation and frustration. I will be purchasing a home warranty next year but I assure you that it will... Read More

I have 3 open Service Requests that have been pending for 5 weeks and can get no help from FirstAm getting contractors here. The 1st one was called in on 7/10 for a small leak in my pool pump. The guy came and said he needed to order 2 parts. He called me 3 days later and said he has the parts, and when he gets back over in Escondido he'll give me a call. Never heard from him again. I've done multiple "Recalls" through FirstAm. I've called FirstAm to request a new contractor and they just say they'll send the contractor a reminder. The 2nd one was when my pool heater went on by itself (with switch clearly in "Off") and because there was no water going thru it, it melted some PVC... Read More

The Customer Service is very bad. They make it hard to talk and explain the situation. Does not provide adequate response, even when warranted. I requested a recall and re-evaluation of an issue related to plumbing and nothing happened. I tried calling many time, and each time we were put on waiting for more than 30 mins, and then got disconnected. On couple of occasions, I was able to talk to Customer Representative and explained why the diagnosis was wrong. I had to call outside party to fix the issue, which was suppose to be covered under the warranty. The company, citing an incorrect diagnosis, ruled that the claim is declined. Even after I posted the correct issue and also how I hired... Read More

We have had a contract with First American for 5 years now. The service was great in the beginning. Now when I call (after being on hold for at least 20 minutes) I talk to someone at a call center that follows a script. It takes forever to get an actual person on the line. They have twice refererred me to companies that either don't offer service in my area or don't even deal with First American. I would never recommend this company to anyone looking for a home warranty.
