Coverage Options - 4.5 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 4.5 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

I had First American for over 8 years at my previous home and 2 years in this current home, up until this last month. In the past few years we began having issues with getting repairs done timely or completed by competent professionals. For the past two years, we have been fighting with them to fix our HVAC (heating and cooling system). We have not had heat for the past two years, which in Arizona is not as bad, but it still gets cold here. My home with space heaters was able to stay around the low 60s during the winter. However, every three months we had issues with the heat or the air due to the system losing coolant. Since March 2021, we have not had air that cooled the house... Read More

I have a warranty through First American Home Warranty. I have not had air conditioning in my home, in the South, in the middle of summer, for 3 months now. I have had the warranty for years. I have had to fight them on claims before but never to this extent. My air conditioner stopped working and I called First American to file a claim on May 27, 2021. As of today, August 23, 2021, I still do not have working air. There have been delays caused by numerous issues including the contractor they selected misdiagnosing the issue initially, repeated failures to approve purchase orders, and most recently the wrong part being ordered and not realized until it was being installed. Every time... Read More

I have had a policy for over 20 years. First American claim no limit on claims. I have filed claims in 2020 and 2021 with some ending in a cash out for replacement of items. I found on Aug 18, 2021 that my policy has be terminated. At that time I requested date of termination and for a copy of cancellation letter for my records. I was told that I would not get either the date of letter or a copy of letter and I would have to contact Complaint Dept., P.O. Box 8030, West Hills, CA 91309 by mail only! I requested a phone number or email address and was told there is none for the complaints. I should of received notice by mail and email, both of which are on file at First American. Very... I submitted a claim to fix my dryer 3 months ago and paid the $75 service fee. It took 3 weeks for the first repairman to come out. It needed a part which arrived at my door 2 days later. 2 no shows and over 2 months later and I still can't get anyone to come fix it. I lodged a complaint with the BBB as well as calling this company multiple times. Last time I spoke with them they told me I needed to be "more patient". Stay away from this company!

Service is very poor. If your claim is an easy fix, the service is fine, but if there are complications, it is terrible. I do not recommend this company. My claim involved plumbing. The first plumber came and claimed it was an appliance issue. The appliance person came and said it is a plumbing issue. The second plumber came and said this is a major problem inside the wall, and doubted that First American would cover it, but he would submit his report. I heard nothing afterwards except that it was being reviewed. Trying to contact them by phone is a nightmare. They tell you to go to fahw.com to submit your request. There is no link there to do other than buy a policy.... Read More

This company is awful. Not only do they use terrible contractors, but they do not service their customers or resolve complaints. I have service orders pending for months that don’t get resolved and their solution is to try and call the contractor (who won’t complete the work) or escalate my complaint to another department (I’ve come to believe this department doesn’t exist as I never hear back when this happens). I have called more times than I can count and every time you call you listen to 5 minutes of hold messages about delays due to Covid over and over. I have lost faith in their ability to resolve or service their plans. I’ve now used my own contractor and paid for it with my... Read More

We discovered a leak in both the refrigerator and dishwasher of our newly purchased home. After requesting service online and paying the required service fee, a technician came out and fixed the refrigerator leak, ordered parts for the dishwasher and said he'd return when parts arrived. We did have to wait for the parts to arrive before scheduling the follow-up which added another two weeks to the repairs being finished. However, both technicians arrived on time, completed the tasks efficiently and completely. Claims and scheduling are all done online. When we did have a problem with the computer not taking our request for the follow-up appointment, I called customer service and got... Read More

First American Home Warranty We are giving you one star because that is the only option we have and additionally because they actually answer the phone only to hang up when you ask for a supervisor. This review is to WARN homeowners that are considering this company. DO NOT go with this warranty company, we have had the WORST experience with them. Our water heater burst and since the time we put the claim in we have gotten nothing but the run around. On day one, we were told that a plumber would come out and take care of the issue. A plumber came almost 24 hours later only to assess the water heater. That evening (4 days ago) we were told that we would not have hot water until the... Read More

This was our first experience with a home warranty company and god, what a nightmare! As part of the coverage, they told us we could rekey 4 locks in the house. When the technician showed up, turned out he wasn’t even a certified locksmith. He worked for Meridian Property management company, which FAHW contracted with. So ok, being first time homeowners, we didn’t know any better, so we let him proceed. BIG MISTAKE He took apart the front door lock and wasn’t able to put it back together! So he left a huge mess, packed up and took off! Called Meridian Property to complain and their response was “so what?! He can’t put it back together, so what do you want me to do?!” Are you...
