Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Switched from HSA Home Warranty to AHS when we relocated last year. Had heard good reviews. Not impressed with the one time we used it for our heat pump in January, had to wait several days for service and pay $75 service call fee. Tech had me send photos before he'd even come out. Did very little, said it was woking within acceptable limits (though house didn't get above 60 degrees) and wouldn't offer suggestions on what to do to improve situation. Get renewal form, and price went up $150. Was told the $661 original rate was because I was a new customer. This was NOT told to us when we signed up. Called sales, only offered $100 discount. Contacted via FB and they deleted my comment rather... Read More

I have been a customer for 17 years. At the end of November 2018 I called in a repair request for my expensive water heater which was making a loud noise and vibrating off the wall. Over the next 4 months the selected servicing company has been to my house 7 times and has changed everything except my hot water heater. Two of the "fixes I had to pay for (adding a flushing system to the unit that it did not come with. Their final "fix" resulted in my having scalding hot water to ice cold water in a 4 minute shower. They finally gave up I am now 3 visits into a new plumber after asking for another opinion(that makes 10 inconveniences) who has made changes to correct what the first expert did)... Read More

I called American Home Shield to cancel our policy as of April 20, as a new, less expensive and higher rated company would be used starting April 21. I was informed the next day (April 9) that the policy was cancelled immediately, despite my request to continue it for 2 1/2 week. I was also informed that we would be charged $50.99 for the cancellation, as it was prior to the policy end date. I then called the company back immediately and asked that it be extended until 8/20 to avoid the cancellation fee. I was told that it was too late, as the policy was already cancelled. After 6 more calls and promises that my initial call (April 8) would be reviewed to assure that the cancellation... Read More

The sub contracted companies you use in Southern California are the most un-reliable appliance companies in the business (Accord Appliance Temecula Ca), my Washer has been broken for over 5 weeks and after 2 visits by a technician who doesnt have a clue what he is doing, has missed diagnosed once and the 2nd diagnosis isnt looking good so far because again it takes weeks to get GE parts, everybody sells GE parts...WTF!

I suggest you do not work with this company- they place you on hold forever - the people they hire are hard to understand and their venders many times have horrible reviews. You have no choice of vendors and the vendor does not call back in a timely manner.

Horrible customer service! Worst decision I have ever made while owning a home.

This company takes your money and then provides nothing. I am pregnant and have a small child at home and we contacted them to send someone out to fix our AC that was turning off and on over and over and also making buzzing noises. The AC worked when the guy arrived. He flushed the line and within 30 minutes to an hour, it stopped working completely. AHS refuses to send anyone else out or send them back out even though temps in TX are over 90 this week. I spoke with someone with AHS on the phone and asked to speak to a supervisor. She asked, “what for?” And then hung up on me. We called back and asked immediately to speak with a supervisor and eventually were connected. The supervisor just... Read More

American Home Shield refuses to replace my refrigerator! Our ice machine has been broken since May 2018. Since the first visit of the repairman, they have had to come out an additional 10 times to try to repair the ice machine. That's a total of 11 TIMES!!! So many parts have been replaced, and in some cases, parts have been replaced multiple times. Yet I still don't have a working ice maker. Since the appliance company keeps on ordering different parts in an attempt to fix it, AHS refuses to say it's not repairable. I've had to take 11 days off since May for them to come and try to fix the fridge. Did I mention 11 TIMES?!? I've called and pleaded, begged, and wept on the phone with the... Read More

Worst company they cover nothing you pay more for the technician to come out when they come out you pay them to tell you the ac unit is no good and american home shield would not pay to replace it they tried to fix it it cost me 650.00 for Freon the Freon leaked out and thy told me to pay for the Freon again. They did not fix the problem it cost me 6800.00 to replace the unit. Not happy canceled contract would never recommend this american home shield or any warranty company it’s all a scam instead of paying 125.00 for a home shield tech you could always call a reliable company and get free estimates for repairs or replacement save your money and set aside a separate bank account and put...
