Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

AHS and some of their contractors have a strange idea of customer service. We live in the Phoenix area (population 4 million) and have a late model GE refrig. Two weeks after entering the service request on the AHS website, refrig still not working. Service tech from Appliance Resources said it was a common problem that GE has a "kit" available. It took a week to get the part ordered and still not here. After daily calls to Appliance Resources with only 1 call back, still no repair date. Several calls to AHS has resulted in no updates. Request to talk to a Supervisor were all rejected as "none available". I don't mind the $640 annual fee, the $75 service call charge, but have... Read More

Please steer clear of this company!!! They're a rip off and we plan to share our story in moving forward with a class action law suit along with many others who have been taken advantage of by this "company". We are military family and will pass our story around to everyone we know in hopes they don't get screwed over like we have!

Pros: The plumbers were really friendly and professional. Cons: The woman who answers the found is not particularly friendly. The plumbers stated there was nothing wrong with my water heater, which I disagree and felt that we paid $75 for nothing. Issue: We noticed the hot water heater was not getting any hot water. Then we started only getting hot water for maybe 3 minutes before it goes cold. The plumbers told my husband it is due to the cold temperature outside, which I disagree. We bought our house almost four years ago (which mean we had the water heater for 3 winters which had very cold temps) and never had an issue with our hot water. In the past and up until last Saturday, 3... Read More

Stay away from American Home Shield (AHS) at all costs. AHS is probably one of the worst companies with which I have done business. Indeed, if AHS does not solve my problem or return my money today, I will sue them. AHS sent a technician to my home on January 25 to repair a dishwasher, a refrigerator, and an oven. The technician called AHS for authorization to get the parts that were needed for the repair. on January 25, but there was noone at AHS who could authorize the needed parts. The repair company AHS sent to my home called AHS a number of times to get the needed authorization, but there was never anyone at AHS who could authorize the needed parts. I called AHS on numerous... Read More

I have been with this company over 15 years and have used company perhaps less than 10 times. I am a working adult, third party contracting is great but they need to contract with companies providing services on weekends and after 5pm. I work Monday-Friday from 8-5, inconvenient to take a day off after I have paid this company so much over the years. This company must come into future working professionals can not take off to have a service contractor in his or her home, just because contractors do not work on weekends. It cost me more to take off, pay for yearly service, then pay the fee for repair, versus just locating a licensed contractor as my financial advisor indicated who I can... Read More

Why am I being charged for two plumbers ,when one handled s detail last call? Coperuperlis plumber. And why am I being charged before service is completed when requested after work done. Is this the special Cal rate double the plumbers and charge before done. Feeling deliberately ripped off and disrespected. Dear AHS retention department, I have been with them for 6 years and I have been disappointed with them the last few years. The ability to communicate with them is near impossible and the claims are being denied. If a covered appliance is functioning but not properly, then they don't do anything. My wife and I both work like most people today and getting to talk to AHS and get answers is very difficult. If this is the best, what am I going to do about a home warranty company?

Honest review, not one filtered on the AHS website. Read the very fine print in this warranty - there are so many exclusions had I known before closing I would have shopped around. Some of the contractors they send will lie about work performed to make themselves look good to AHS, but you will still have a problem and/or and exclusion. It makes me very angry that they take advantage of consumers. This issue was a plumbing stoppage at 35 feet from the drain, which the technician told them he snaked through the toilet to 25 feet (which is not possible, BTW.) This was my only request for service in two years and I was definitely taken advantage of -- I've paid $1,400 over two years to be... Read More

Horrible service...I have been trying to get my kitchen appliances serviced for past 3 months and neither AHS nor the contractor Pro Appliance Services are responding to my issues. I have gone on social media as well to try to get some help but AHS is just not addressing. If I could give a negative star I would do that. I am being harassed by this company.

TERRIBLE COMPANY! as of right now we have 2 feet of sewage in our basement and this has been since Sunday afternoon at 3pm... i was told by their representative that the soonest their contractor can make it to my home is "possibly" Tuesday... now mind you we have 2 FEET OF RAW SEWAGE in our home! Representatives are very rude and put you on endless hold if they choose not to help you!
