Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Read the fine print, read the fine print, I say again read the fine print. I think Home Shield might be a SCAM or at least they give the appearance of one. You need to know your emergency is not their emergency, what I mean is what is an emergency for you might be not be what they consider an emergency to them at all. Being a new member for a short while I decided to use HOME SHEILD for the first time, Thursday morning my water heater stopped working so cold showers for everyone. I called “AHS” I and used their automated service to set up a service call for my repair and paid my $100-dollar service fee. After waiting for about four hours I decided to give the service company a call to see... Read More

Not happy, hold time for customer service is too long. They have limited vendors. If you complaint to customer service for delay or about vendors, no results except you will hear back sugar coated comments they will take care of problem.

So far not happy. Had a contractor called for my pool, they came out and inspected it which was the last I heard from them. Do ever use Aaron Pools in Tempe, AZ as they never call you have to call them to find out AHS does not cover my claim. Never heard back from my warranty company or the vendor. Can understand how these warranty companies are allowed to lie in their advertising.

Watch out, already over 3 weeks and stove not repaired. They are trying to find reason not to warranty. Service manager hide and does not pick up the phone to answer questions . Coward Would not recommend. Don’t believe high ratings.

I strongly recommend you do NOT WRITE ANY FUTURE HOME WARRENTY POLICIES WITH AMERICAN HOME SHIELD. Spread the word among realtors. It isn't just that they have denied full coverage of my HVAC system as clearly stated in the policy, it is the fact that each time one of their reasons is disproved they come up with another reason - even if that contradicts earlier statements. It's just too much to believe that they ever intended to honor the policy as written. AHS was denying full coverage of my split system due to fine print in the policy referring to NC Codes. Mr. Dittman, the code authority at the NC Dept of Insurance in Raleigh. sent e-mails to both Brenda Hogue at AHS & to... Read More

SCAM Outfit. Whoever wrote this review, works for, or is being paid by AHS. They will replace your products with GARBAGE. Then blame it on their supplier. Making it an inside scam, as they chose the supplier, not the other way around. Nice try, SCAM SHIELD. Advise- RUN

My name is Bruce Whitlock and I live in Grapevine Texas. We have a washer that is covered by American Home Shield. The issue is that the spin cycle in the Maytag Neptune does not wring / spin all of the water out of the clothes for heavy loads. We have had two separate companies out with each company stating how the other should have checked x and would have solved the issue. My issue: the washer is still broken. Its been well over 30 days. When you call American Homeshield you are required to wait 30 or more minutes. I called on Monday 10/2 and my service will be on Thursday 10/5. If this next service is like the last several service calls some part will need to be ordered which takes... Read More

I had AHS for seven yrs. I paid my monthly fee on time. and when I wanted services, they said, It was my fault by the contractor. I still had to pay the deductible to contractor for coming out to my house. NO SERVICES. I will cancelled because I got robbed by AHS.

I recently had inside plumbing problems, I contacted AHS and in a very shot while I was contacted by a local plumber and an appointment was set up. The problem was corrected in timely manner. I'm greatly pleased with AHS, and will recommend this company to any body.

Very disappointed in American Home shield. I had an issue with my pool heater, which is covered under the terms of my contract. I submitted an online service request and did not hear from anyone for 7 days regarding a service provider. After 7 days, I called AHS customer service and was informed that AHS had the wrong phone number and could not contact me (no one has email?!?) I was also told that Ray's Pool service had accepted the job, and would be in contact. I called Ray's pool service and spoke to Ray, who informed me that, no, he in fact had not taken the job, and had no desire to work with AHS. After several more calls over several more days, and lengthy hold times, I spoke with a... Read More
