Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

The service company contracted to provide the repair did fine work, however American Home Shield had me wait almost a week for the parts to complete the repair. I had it from reliable sources the evaporator needed was available locally. In other words, the job could have been completed the next day. I wonder if I was in a management position at AHS and my a/c quit working for the same reason, would I be cool the next day?

Scheduling the appointment was very easy, following up with customer service is almost impossible. The only way to submit follow up questions is through a phone call to Home Shield, and I've been put on hold for 45+ minutes each time with no answer. Someone please contact me!

The plumber who came to the house is great. That's five stars. I've used them in the past. Would highly recommend them. I am glad he was sent here. Now, onto American Home Shield. After being on hold for almost an hour to simply ask, "is this covered?" the CSR told me it wasn't. (Hot water expansion tank). After I paid the $75+ tax for the plumber to exchange the expansion tank, it was covered. It is so awesome to pay close to $700 or more for this service each year and it's always a crap shoot as to what is actually covered. But, since it was going to cost at least the same amount to have anyone come out I rolled the dice. But, at least it's good for some big items (asterisk: check your... Read More

I find that most of the time the problems I have are not covered. The latest was last month: Water spraying all over the kitchen? The sprayer nozzle has "fallen off" and the plumber says he can't find it. Missing parts aren't covered. Um, what? It must be there because water was not spraying and now it it. I don't get a call from a customer service agent until 3 hours later aggressively asking me if I see it. No, I don't see it, as I've said three times already, I've had to go back to work; I'm not at home. Then I start getting emails saying I have a past due balance. How can it be past due if you've never asked me for payment before? The plumber just left. We assumed that... Read More

If I could give zero stars, I would. I have NOTHING good to say about this company. About two years ago, something changed. You CANNOT get anyone to the phone. Don't try their "chat." It doesn't work either. If you do finally get someone after an hour wait - they won't speak English. The service person did not show up at out house. When I called and was on hold for over an hour, they kept saying they were on the way and in the next town over. Repairman finally called and said he's not coming and he didn't know who that was that said he was on the way. I waited and waited. The repair was to be between 0800-1200. By 630pm, no show and never showed. While I waited, I had to arrange rides for... Read More

Dealing with AHS with our washing machine repair has been a nightmare. Over a 4 week period they sent a repair person out 3 times and each time he didn't repair it and said he would have to order new parts which pushed it off another week. Going into the 5th week of being without a washing machine and one of the parts ordered being on back order, we were forced to go to the laundromat for the 2nd time spending 6 hours and $100 each time to do laundry for our family of 7. I called AHS and told them it was not reasonable to expect me to wait an indefinite amount of time on a part that may or may not fix it according to the repair person so I asked them to just reimburse me whatever they...
