Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

11.23, 11.24 & 11.29 of 2021 Hard to get through the automated phone service and hard to understand non American on the other end of the phone. The contractor May air and heating service schedule and reschedule 3x and no show but was paid for work they never did. I took off from work waiting. They hard to get in contact with as well...no return calls/email. They lied and told AHS they came by but what they didnt know...I have cameras around my property. My system is old 2004 and it's not working properly. (Voiding work?) I will be reporting all parties.

This company sucks. My electrical panel burnt up and they just want to fix it instead of replace the whole panel which is outdated and if they fix it they same thing is going to happen. It's crazy I think I talked to the rooster in the background more than the people on the phone which get you no where. The contractors have issues contacting AHS to get even get approved for the job. A week with out electricity and they don't care.

I have read all the comment in the selection box! You guys are tell the truth about this company! I am dropping this company. The customer service that oversea. Suck! I was talking to one to get my water heater fix and I hear a rooster in the bad ground, (smh). And on top of that the contract want me to play $1,800. 00 just to replace a water heater. No Thanks! I bought my on water heater and got me my own plumber. Then I send in the receipt for my refund. They tell me they can only refund me $404.56 back. Which I pay $800. 00 for the water heater and the service to get fix. No Thank You! I don't want your service.

The only good thing I can say about this company is that the contractors contacted me quickly. The coverage is not worth your money. I still paid expensive fees out of pocket to get my repairs completed also one of the companies they recommended tried to lie about the work that needed to be done and I had to get a second opinion which obviously caused delays when I spoke with customer service the guy was had poor customer service and is the reason why I canceled after my first year contract.

Rip off, this company should be called Indian Home Warranty, yes, it sounds prejudice and I don't believe in political correctness, I think these people get a commission on denning claims, they lie, they keep you on hold for 45 min, they say they will call you back, they don't, our electric went out, we waited 24 hours for them to call us back with a service tech, no return calls, we called them back and they said they can't find anybody, ( no communications ) we had to do their job and try and find some one. we did, and they denied our claim, we currently have our state investigating them, the tech followed their procedures and they still denied the claim after the work was completed.... I am in the process of trying to get a Frigidaire refrigerator icemaker repaired. It takes me at least an hour to get through on the phone because the number goes to some other country. Once they finally answer they tell me that they have to send me to the US number. I was then transferred to the Mexico number. Eventually I did get the US number. They guaranteed me twice that they were looking into the issue. Promised and guaranteed I would receive A call back from a supervisor on two different occasions. I’m still waiting for that phone call. I’m in the process of checking out other Home Warranty companies because this one is obviously not stepping up and doing its job. I would give it... Read More

Very good at giving you the run around. They take the money out of my account and then tell me they could not find a contractor that would do the work and I should find somebody and summit the bill for possible reimbursement

NEVER, NEVER contract to use AMERICAN HOME SHIELD. I was a high production REALTOR for 35 years prior to retiring and I apologize to all of the people that I suggested look into AHS before purchasing their home. My experience was not only frustrating but also very costly. AHS sent out a technician who once he saw my A/C unit said that he could fix it. He never did, but since he came out and attempted to repair it AHS considered their obligation complete. After not having a/c all summer and realizing that AMERICAN HOME SHIELD was not going to fix my problem I found a local contractor who repaired the system for $600 which I paid out of pocket ever after PAYING AHS for their policy for 5... I had to fight with this company to get any work done. I waited over 6 months to get my washer replaced. They then proceeded to raise my rates.

Avoid this company like the plague!!! It is. NOT the same company it used to be. They continue to pick the worst contract companies and then when you go a month or more (almost 2 months now) without your appliance they refuse to replace the appliance by continuing to give so sim scripted patronizing response and fail to follow up with you. I have reported the to BBB and will be seeking legal action against them. I only gave them a half a star because they used to be decent. But something changed. Stay Away!!!
