Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

It is funny to read all of these reviews of great service when I have been without A/C now for a month and I can't get a simple phone call. No help at all. I am begging anyone at AHS that can help to please contact me. Warranty number 217023442. Y'all have mt contact numbers and email as well as Facebook. I have filed official complaints with the BBB in Memphis as well as the Mississippi Attorney Generals consumer protection division. I am in retail sales myself and our business would go under if we had this kind of Customer service. Aweful is all I can think of along with Fraudulent.

American Home shield did not care that the contractor that they used the first two times damaged my air conditioner. Furthermore it took two days to get someone competent out to my home when the house would reach over 100 degrees. My mother has a heart condition and diabetes. I had to go buy two window air conditioner units at over $600 so we could live in the house while we waited. I was promised money in compensation and have received nothing. I prepaid this plan and have NO intention of renewing it. I have spent more than 7 hours on hold for this issue to end up with a home that is hotter than when we started. I intend to cancel at the end of the year and go with a different company... Read More

Long wait times and poor communication between service companies and AHS. I have to call AHS after EVERY service visit, because the repair approval/parts ordering does not go through unless I ask about it. I have never (yet) received a follow-up call even when I've been promised the same, and the call-in process is tedious because there are too few customer service representatives compared to callers (last call in took over an hour on hold to reach someone).

I have been an AHS customer for a little over 2 years. My home is about 11 years old and I live in a part of the country that experiences all four seasons thoroughly (Snowy winters, hot and sometimes humid winters, and temperate transitions in the spring and fall). AHS is quick to make appointments to fix problems when we contact them. I'm pleased with that aspect of the warranty. There are very few things I have come across that I am not pleased about, and even some of those are out of AHS's control. One thing I have a problem with that they could fix is that it would be nice if they gave more credit towards refrigerant in the A/C unit like 50% of the cost or similar (my unit takes... Read More

This summer I got my AC issues. Called up AHS, had service people from comfort first heating & cold scheduled to come in to take a look. The complaint if so, mostly would be towards the service company who came to fix my a/c - First day they came and said there were bushes around the unit & they can't work on the unit so I ended up in paying them the fees to just to visit me and then on next day they came and cleaned the unit and said everything else looks good. But, right after a day or two, the a/c broke down again. Called AHS to schedule another dispatch (but getting an AHS representative isn't an easy task, I wish they recruited more customer care personnel especially for repeated... Read More

i have always received great repair work. The technicians have always been professional and complete the job quickly. The only thing I dislike is that if it is on the weekend I always have to wait till the next week.

So I have had AHS on several homes and initially they were good to work with. However lately the contractors they work with are very unreliable, wait times for live calls are ridiculous , a/c coverage is nothing but a band aid. My home units keep having troubles cooling throughout the heat of summer. They keep telling the contractor to replace freon which they barely cover. Then my condo a/c just went out. The AHS contractors took 4 days to come out. Verified the old unit needed replacing. AHS will only cover the compressor but not full unit. Two contractors verified that just replacing compressor wouldn't work. Then get home and find in mail they are canceling the coverage on my main... Read More

American home shield has the absolute worst call times. I am writing this whilst on hold for 61 minutes and still another hour to go. Supervisors do not return calls and the service reps will not work with you to get a service company within a decent amount of time. I will not be recommending this company to anyone and I will be reporting this to the Texas BBB and as many chambers of commerce I can and I will not be renewing my plan. I have been awaiting a response call from a supervisor that I was told would contact me within 48 hours. 48 hours was up 9 days ago. Poor business practices. This is where excuses are unacceptable and solutions mut be embraced. Why this company rated... Read More
