Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

The contractor came promptly upon be scheduled. He arrived, assessed the situation and work a plan of action. Tried option 1, no luck, option 2, no luck, option 3, success. All three were confirmed to me there was a excellent degree of professionalism, and he moved through the problem solving skills with ease. Excellent service!

My dryer has been broken for over 2 months. I have to drive over an hour to use a laundry mat. My husband is bedridden and I’m 75 . After waiting in parts back ordered and the the parts were wrong finally the service man said the motor is ruined . I need a replacement and soon . I’ve paid for years to this company and first time using them I want To be honored and helped from AHS.

I have been with AHS for over 20 years and added my vacation home to the account 15 years ago. I am clearly pleased with the service. Does everything go my way 100% of the time? Well of course not but I'm not sure it would've without AHS either. I don't have to look for a plumber, electrician, HVAC repair and if the job isn't done to my satisfaction then they come back at no charge. I had 2 HVAC issues (primary and vacation) and a water heater issue on week of Christmas. I was amazed all 3 were addressed that week. One technician had to return because of the hot water heater but by December 23rd at 3PM we were goo to go. I will renew every year!

AHS has once again come through for me! I requested service online and received a call from a service provider within an hour. My furnace was repaired quickly, after parts were acquired, by a professional and respectful technician. I've had AHS as my warranty company for 7 years and have never regretted it!

I've been with Home Shield for over ten years and every situation I've had in those ten plus years were addressed by a vendor that Home Shield has sent to my home. It may have taken a couple of weeks to fix, but it was due to having parts shipped in from the continental U.S. and being in Hawai'i, it sometimes takes a while, but the problem has always been fixed. I've heard from people who've had other companies like Home Shield to take care of their broken appliances and they usually have horror stories about dealing with their company and I recommend Home Shield to them because of my experiences.

After seeing an advertisement that American home shield was a good company, I decided to do this. But a year later, the washing machine in my house broke down, so I applied for repair, but I was really disappointed. American home shield told me to contact only subcontractors. After 10 days, the subcontractor sent a technician to check the problem and return. He said he would contact me to make repairs again, but there was no contact. And when I went to the homepage, I saw that my case was complete. I was so embarrassed. American home shield is really the worst company. Do not recommend this company anymore.

Waldron Mechanical of Wilson replaced both of the water supply valves for the washing machines. They put in incorrect valves and did not replace the washer box. The new water pipes were too long and when the mechanic attached the supply valves to the washer box the pipes are bent from being too long. Because the lines are too long the valves are at an angle and not seated properly in the washer box. I have pictures of the work they performed and will share them. I did not notice their workmanship until they mechanics left as they pushed the washer against the wall. I needed to put a zip tie on the discharge hose to keep it from coming out during the drain cycle. I saw that the mechanic... Read More

If you have a problem then you don't have any recourse. The call center in India will simply contact the technician and push back on the consumer. You can't get a real resolution to any problems. I have had a stove and an oven that have not operated correctly since July of this year. The response from AHS is to fix it even though it's obviously still not working. They have spent more money trying to fix the problem than actually just replacing it. They will also not provide apples to apples. A sump pump died, a rather expense one, and it was replaced with a cheap $75 unit. The original sump pump was over $500. So I spent $500 initially and got a $75 plastic model in return....
