Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

It won't let me give negative stars for this review. Horrible plan. Needed furnace replaced and company telling me that code upgrades (just to install the new unit) are going to be almost 4k. They told me they would give me a cash out option to get it replaced of $500. They said the warranty covers the replacement but not the cost to bring the install up to code. How the hell can someone say they will cover the REPLACEMENT but not the install? That's like Honda saying they will replace the engine in your car but not the install. So you need to pay to have it put in the car. Pay for new hoses cause the old ones aren't up to code. And also pay for a new transmission because the new engine is... Read More

We have had this warranty for about 6 or 7 months and have had nothing but bad experiences. Our refrigerator has not worked correctly since moving into our new home in OK, so we have had to utilize AHS twice. Whenever I have to call them I am on hold for a minimum of 45 minutes. After submitting a service request days go by before I I even get an appointment scheduled. I have to call around to find my own repair service because it takes too long for AHS to find anyone. I am able to find a repair man in a few hours (including ones on their approved list) but they have taken up to a week to find one. Also, I never receive communication from AHS. Even when they say they will call me back they... Read More

Our recent experience with AHS regarding our dishwasher problems was very expeditiously and satisfactorily resolved. The service company responded within 24 hours of our call to AHS. An attempt to repair the unit was unsuccessful, and AHS was so informed by the service company. AHS advised us immediately of our options, and when our choice was made information on procedure was forthcoming. The fund amount extended was not only reasonable, but was within the market pricing for a replacement. Customer Service was always, without exception informed, courteous, and helpful in resolving our situation. Many Kudoes to AHS!

AHS has been fair and prompt in our requests for services that we have requested. The assignment of a professional contractor was almost immediate, and all the repairs were done within one business day. Our out-of-pocket expense was only our deductible.

I called American Home Shield to report a problem with my AC. It was on a very warm day. Within an hour I had a call from the contractor assigned to my claim. He was out at my residence the next morning & thankfully he could handle problem. I was pleased with the service I received from the contractor.

Their response time is poor, good luck if you have an issue with your furnace in cold weather. I've had several issues with contractors not showing up to do the repair or with poor workmanship. I don't think they vet the service companies they use at all. I researched one company that refused to come back and complete the job and found they had a very long history of doing shoddy work, no way they would be in business if it wasn't for companies like AHS keeping them in business. I've found that they often have a hard time finding anyone to work in my area and I live in a major suburb outside of Boston. When it comes to furnace issues, I don't even bother to call AHS because we'd freeze... Read More

I am currently experiencing the worst service from AHS. Something has drastically changed within the last few months with them. I've been a customer since 20014 and has had to use my warranty on two previous occasions. The service then was prompt and very professional. However, my most recent experience with them in getting my washer repaired is terrible. The repair man deemed my washer unrepairable and submitted a request for AHS to get me a new washer as my contract with them quoted. This has been 2 weeks ago and since I have been unable to get thru to the appliance purchase dept. The recording states that the hold time is greater than 30 minutes, but I have called 5 to 6 times and was... Read More

Am getting ready to drop this company. Took too long to respond and they have no contractors that will work on weekends. Took 12 days to get new hot water heater!

Was a customer for about 1 year. Called service for refrigerator 3 times for the same problem. Called AHS told them that problem isn't fixed. They did nothing. I finally bought my a new refrigerator which I think is cheaper than keeping the contract at $45.99 per month, and having to pay $75 each service request. AHS will try and get you to come on board and promise you everything.....don't fall for their crap!!! Save your money!!!! Don't sign up for this.

Terrible service. Actually, no service at all. You pay money and...then do all scheduling and finding contractors yourself, even in emergency situation. Per agreement, they need to bring the contractor in case of emergency in 24 hours. We had leaking pipe inside the house on Friday ev and it was flooding everywhere. We called AHS, they told us they can send plumber only on Monday-Tuesday. When we disagreed and started demanding for plumber right away, as the water was everywhere - they send us the list of contractor, to whom we can call and find the one who can fix the problem....They did not help at all.
