Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I am giving them one star only because zero stars is not an option. We purchased a home on February 26, 2016. As part of the contract, a home warranty policy was purchased through American Home Shield. We moved into the home the next day and shortly realized that our heat was not working. At the time I was pregnant, due on May 13, 2016. I contacted American Home Shield (AHS) within a few days of moving into the home. I was told that since the paperwork was still processing that I was allowed one service request within the first 21 days of the warranty period. I explained to the AHS customer service representative that we had just purchased the home, that we had had a home... Read More

This is the worst company I have ever dealt with. They keep you on hold for an hour and then hang up. They refused to replace my dryer, which was clearly broken. They kept sending contractors out that did nothing. They now owe me money and instead of paying me, they keep me on hold.

The service was great as always. I like that it doesn't take a long time to receive a response and scheduling an appointment is quick and easy.

Entering a ticket for something to be fixed was very easy. When it was discovered that the company that was to perform the maintenance no longer existed, American Home Shiel was very helpful in switching to a company that existed and to get the job done in a timely manner. Even if nothing breaks from this point on, I will continue to start with American Home Shield.

It's sad really because overall I think AHS means well but I sometimes think that they are now too big for their own good and are not doing their due diligence or research with the companies they are in partnership with. My wife and I had an extremely horriffic experience with a company called The Service Connection in Philadelphia. They're owner is extremly rude and unprofessional and it trickles down to his employees who are an absolute disgrace. Now, the reason why I will not bore you but if you go on that companies Yelp page you will see nothing but bad reviews and how AHS sent this specific company to these people's homes and will had a similar terrible experience. So my only hope is... Read More

Here is why AHS deserves a 1 STAR!! Dear American Home Shield, Im a very unhappy customer of yours. I've been with you for many years and you should show 3 accounts on your records. My refrigerator started having problems November 28, 2016. I made a service request online for someone to come and check the problem on November 28th. I just found out today that you assigned it to Fidelity Appliances Service Team. According to them they called me promptly but you had given them my old number. I don't understand why that is when I've updated my profile at www.ahs.com and I no longer see the old number on my profile. Because you've given them the wrong number, no one was able to... November 17, 2016 Emailed AHS Thursday morning 7:55 am that my refrigerator stopped working and initiated repair request. I received confirmation for warrantee repair request from AHS. I was assigned an AHS Dispatch Number and as well as assigned Service Contractor (Lake Area Appliance Service in Rowlett, Texas) with contact information. At 9:00 am that morning I Called Lake Area Appliance Service to verify and confirm service. The earliest they could schedule a service appointment was for the 21st between 10 am and 2 pm. That is two days before Thanksgiving. We have out of town family staying with us for the holiday. Called AHS & talked with Parita trying to expedite the repair... Read More

When my air conditioning went out, I corresponded for months with the corporate office, in writing and over the phone. They refused to reimburse me until I sent them a certified letter saying that if they didn't pay me $6000.00, we would go to court. They immediately paid me and cancelled my contract with them. When I communicated with the State Insurance Department, in California, I was told that American Home Shield had numerous complaints in many states This is a terrible company.

Nearly every time I call, I am on-hold for over an hour-and-a-half. Today we are closing in on two hours and still on-hold. For this item (dishwasher) twice they have sent out repairmen who were unable to repair the unit and we had to wait around for their four-hour window. The repairmen usually show up AFTER the indicated time window without any indication that they will be late. The previous repair they've done was a disposal replacement - a couple weeks later they had to come back because they did not attach the electric line properly and it came loose - more time waiting around and missing work. Having to take off work to wait around for them to show up (multiple times) in addition to... Read More
