Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Generally, I don't write reviews as some times the experience is good and some other times bad with every company. Bad experience with this company. I insured two homes with this company for over 2 years. When I really had a problem, the insurance is of no help. I had to spend from my pocket. First time, I called for a water leakage as the house flooded with water damaging everything including floor and walls. Immediately, I placed a call with the company. They allotted a service provider and he never call me or when I called none responded. I had to call a private contractor to find the issue and fix it. The damage caused due to this delay was more than $13,000. Thanks to my insurance... Read More

Before leaving she explained that if I had problems call the number she left.with me.I was very happy with my experience with the Tech.

AHS sent a very competent professional to service and replace my existing system. The service was prompt and professionally completed. I've recommended AHS to all of my friends. And some of them now have protection from AHS.

I had a problem with my refrigerator, water dispenser, called AHS and they immediately arranged for a repair of the problem. The service call cost less that what it would have been without AHS and the cost of labor and parts was included.

I just retired from the AF on 1 April, we have set up an account with these crooks to ensure that if anything went wrong we could get our home taken care of. On Saturday night our water heater sprung a leak & we called AHS Sunday May 15th. They got a plumber to our house on Tue. He told us that it he had submitted his work order to AHS & that he would prob be back on Thurs to complete the work. Long story short they tried to tell us that we were going to have to pay $750 out of pocket to replace our water heater. When asked for a payout to get another plumbing company to do it. They refused to tell what they were going to pay the other company & told us that "that information was... Read More

I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate this company. We've been using them for 6 years (because we don't have access to a lot of other options). Every year for the past six years, our air conditioner has leaked freon. Every year, for the past six years, we've paid nearly $200 + $75 call out fee to fill the freon because the A/C will continue working through the summer at the pace that it leaks. (They only cover $10/pound for freon because it's a gas, not a component.) We've also had problems with many of the companies they contract with: coming after the agreed upon appointment time, waiting until the end of 3 days (that's their contract time) before calling to set up an appointment - then... I think you guys are spot on! Whenever I call, it's easy to set up an appointment and the contractors always call me within a very short time to schedule it. I am pleased with the contractors with whom you work as they are always friendly, courteous and professional. I appreciate your company and what it has done for me in the past and I will continue to be a good customer. Thank you.

Normally I'd give AHS a 5 star rating. As a retired real estate broker, I always pushed AHS. Something has changed. Service isn't what it used to be? Was it sold? They state they use local contractors. That's an outright lie. I live in Bakersfield. Ice maker went out. They sent repair to LA Appliance. Look them up on Yelp. Took 4 business days before I was called which is in violation of AHS policies. About a week later, they send out a repairman. He said he knew exactly what was wrong and had to order the part. I'm thinking, ok, there's a local wholesale appliance parts store in town that carries this part. He could just make a quick trip to get it and ice maker is... Read More

I am Customer, that's not satisfy with their services. Be careful what you pay for. This company promise to take care certain item on there contracts and did not delivery. I placed a call in to complain on my AC and sump dump in my basement they sent out two contractors to my house and I paid each of them $100 each. The contractor for the sump pump told me, he will order the parts and come back to fit it. Three weeks later I called the contractor find out what he has come back and he told me that AHS said I am not covered. If they knew I was not covered why did they sent him out to my house? I have paid the contractor $100 and nothing is done. Please beware that this... Read More
