Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Terrible experience with American Home shield. They are good to take money but when it comes to changing any parts or replacing devices, they never respond. Please dont get trapped taking the insurance with these people.

Don't think you should have to pay till service is complete and working.

When you call you have to give all your personal information each time; then you have to beg, hang up, call back trying to get a quicker service response

I have had them for 20+ years and up until the last 2 years it has been great but these last 2 years have not been good at all. And they keep increasing the price every year without letting you know. Mine just jumped $15 a month over last year and the last 2 years have been the same prince until now.

We had a heat pump claim after contractor made inspection AHS said 2500 of repair cost was not covered. Had they gave me a price 1000 or less I would have paid for repairs but I got another company to check unit to get a second estimate. The second company repaired our heat pump for 186 dollars and this included the service call. When I called AHS about this they could care less. AHS tries to find a reason to not cover the problem if it is a large amount of money.

Charged 25% more than originally quoted. Signed up for monthly payment...sometimes charged twice in one month. Slow to respond to calls. Sometimes no one in network and had to arrange own contractor, and wait weeks for reimbursement. Difficult to understand customer reps...definitely a foreign call center. Did not renew. Would NOT recommend.

You state "Many or all of the companies featured here provide compensation to us." Their compensation is obviously enough to outweigh your integrity. AHS is the worst company of any kind I have ever dealt with. They recommend sub standard contractors who often can't/won't do the work so AHS forces you to find one on your own. Then they force that contractor to provide a line by line bid so they can pay only pennies on the dollar for the work. The process typically takes months of unsatisfactory back and forth with incompetent or lying employees. Check the thousands of complaints to BBB and the FaceBook pages for unhappy consumers. Your web page is a disgrace and totally misleads... Read More

This is the worse home warranty people to have. Wasted money on premiums could never get anything fixed. The call center is out sourced so you can never speak to a US citizen. Absolutely hate this company. Home owners be aware. I have an attorney looking into this case to see if we can be refunded all of our premium payments. Would never recommend or use this company ever again
